Barbara Ann (Sefrit) Shields November 10, 1949 – February 26-2012

  Barbara Ann (Sefrit) Shields was born November 10, 1949 in Leon, Iowa to Robert and Kathleen (Garrett) Sefrit. Barbara grew up on a farm near Delphos, Iowa and attended elementary school in Redding and Delphos. She was baptized and received Christ as her Savior as a young girl. She graduated from Mount Ayr Community high school in 1968. Barbara was united in marriage to Barton Shields on August 3, 1968 in Delphos, Iowa. She and Bart moved to their family farm south of Mount Ayr where they have resided for 43 years. Barbara enjoyed working on the farm and being a homemaker always keeping a spotless house and an immaculate yard. She loved cooking for her family, gardening and canning. Barbara was always very involved in her church teaching Sunday school and playing the piano. Barbara taught preschool for several years as well. The highlight of Barbara’s life was her grandchildren. She was very proud of each of their accomplishments. She spent countless hours entertaining them and would drop anything to spend time with them.

Barbara was a kind, loving and caring woman who was always showing God’s love even to strangers. She always put others first and could make any situation a positive one. She always had the right words to say to make everyone feel better. She spent countless hours helping family and friends through their trials of life. Her endless faith persevered through the years; even through her illness, always rejoicing in the Lord. Barbara passed away February 26, 2012.

She is survived by her husband, Barton; children, Christy (Brad Still) of Kellerton, Iowa, Lanette Shields of Mount Ayr, Iowa and Josh (Christi) Shields of Mount Ayr, Iowa; grandchildren, Allie, Trevor, Kelcie, Mackenzie, Macey and Kaylie; mother-in-law, Mabel Shields; sister, Nancy (Terry) Brauch of Waukee, Iowa; brother, Robert (Amy) Sefrit of Faifax, Missouri, and brother-in-law, Joe (Margaret) Shields of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Charlcey Ann Bowen; parents, Robert and Kathleen Sefrit, and father-in-law, Junior Shields. A memorial fund has been established in her name to be decided later. Arrangements were by Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr.

Services were conducted at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, with Rev. Ed Shields and Rev. Skip Rushing officiating. Musicians included Alice and Clyde Sweeten.

Casket bearers were Jerry Gregg, Rod Smith, Rod Holmes, Derald Noble, Marty Schnoor and Craig Winemiller.

Barb was laid at rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
