WILLIAM ARTHUR “BILL” SCOTT

    William Arthur (Bill) Scott, son of Lewis and Cora (Birtwell) Scott, was born July 20, 1928 at Kellerton, Iowa.
    Bill attended Mount Ayr schools. He left high school to join the U.S. Army and served at the end of World War II. After his discharge, Bill went back to school and graduated. Bill would re-enter the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was wounded in Korea and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.
    In 1959 he married Virginia Kirchgatter of Mount Ayr at the Baptist church with Rev. Rhinehart officiating. Two children were born to this union, Teri Lynn and Sandy Eugene.
    While in Mount Ayr he was a police officer, filling station attendant and truck driver. Bill and his family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1964. He worked at the West Mercy Hospital as a maintenance electrician. He later worked at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, retiring from there in 1991. Bill also had his own electrical business called Scott Electric.
    Bill loved traveling and camping with his family. His hobbies were reading western books and watching John Wayne movies. He also enjoyed restoring old cars.
    Bill moved to Clearview Home in Mount Ayr in 2009 and passed away on September 1, 2012 after a long period of poor health.
    Surviving Bill are his wife, Virginia Scott of Marshalltown, Iowa; daughter, Teri Meeks of Newton, Iowa; son, Sandy Scott of Marshalltown, Iowa; stepson, Gary Kirchgatter and wife Linda of Marshalltown, Iowa; stepdaughter, Judy Schroeder of Marshalltown, Iowa; four grandchildren, Justin Meeks, Ashley Meeks, Scott Underwood and Shannon Portalis; five great-grandchildren, Haley, Madison, Joshua, Jacob and Jaydon; niece, Cheryl Roach of Tingley, Iowa; great-nephew, BJ Baker of Arkansas, and other relatives and friends.
    Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Underwood and Allan Joseph Schroeder; sister, Winnie Roach, and two nephews, Larry Roach and Billy Roach.
    A memorial fund has been established to the family to be decided later.
    Services were conducted at the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, with Rev. Skip Rushing officiating. Musical selections were ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘U.S. Army Song.’
    Casket bearers included Sandy Scott, Gary Kirchgatter, Scott Underwood, BJ Baker and John Ford.
    Military rites were by Ringgold Post #172 and Iowa Honor Guard Unit.
    Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Bill Scott
