RAYMOND UMBARGER

    Raymond “Shorty” Umbarger was born October 15, 1924 to Bishop Walter Umbarger and Letha (Poe) Umbarger in Fairfax, Missouri.  In his younger years he enjoyed spending time with his horses on the farm. Shorty attended and graduated from the Irish Grove Country School in Fairfax, Missouri.
 In 1945, Shorty was united in marriage to Helen Fern Rinehart. In 1951 Shorty and Helen moved to a farm near Mount Ayr. They lived in Mount Ayr until 1976, when they purchased a feed store in Syracuse, Nebraska. Shorty served as the mayor of Syracuse for many years. They owned and operated the feed store until they retired in 2008. 
 Shorty passed away Friday, April 22, 2016 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.  He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Diana Farrell, Michael Ray and Dawn Marie both in infancy; brother and sister in-law, B.W. (Marge) Umbarger. 
Left to cherish Shorty’s memory is his wife, Helen of Mount Ayr; son, David (Linda) Umbarger of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Patty (Mick) Still of Mount Ayr; son in-law, Bill Farrell of Clarinda; brother, Bill (Marge) Umbarger of Fairfax, Missouri; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
     Services will be held at the Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on April 30, 2016 with Rev. Terry Roberts officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on April 30, 2016.
    Honorary casketbearers will be Stephanie Marksz, Julie Oelke, Brian Umbarger, Mike Still, Matt Still and Brent Farrell. The final resting place will be at Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa. A memorial has been established in Raymond’s name.
