WILLIAM G. JONES
William G. Jones, 86, of Afton, died Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at the Afton Care Center in Afton. Celebration of Life Services will be 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter following the service. HCI Hospice Chaplain Mike Albert will conduct the committal service. Military honors will be provided by Iowa Army National Guard at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery. Open visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to service time on Wednesday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. William George Jones was born October 12, 1930, in Boone, IA., to Richard Jones and Nora (Brown). He attended school north of Red Oak in Stennett during grade school and then attended Zion High School. William left school to help on the farm before moving to Omaha where he attended Railroad School for a short time learning telegraphy.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Richards and to this union three children were born, Stephen Douglas, Martin Ray and Rebecca Ann. They later divorced. He was drafted into the US Army, serving from 1955 to 1957 in Korea. After his discharge, he continued to farm and went on to be a fireman for the railroad in Creston.
In March of 1973 he was united in marriage to Karen Evon (Negethon) in Minneapolis, MN at the Community Methodist Church. Eventually he became an engineer, putting in 30 years of service, before retiring in 1985. William was a member of the NARVE and a former member of the Eagles Lodge, Elks, VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife Karen Jones of Afton, IA.; two sons, Stephen Douglas Jones of Omaha, Neb.; Martin Ray (Laura) Jones of Naples, Fla.; one daughter, Rebecca (husband Kenneth) Cunningham of Afton, IA,; two brothers, Charles Stambaugh of Calif.; Ronald Jones of Coin, IA.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Verlene Jones of Creston and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Milton and Cornelia Negethon, his brother Robert Jones, his sister Shirley Moore, sister-in-law Judy Jones and a brother-in-law Terry Negethon.
