Howard Randal Shields, age 60, of Grand River, Iowa, the son of Oscar Edgar and Beth Larraine (Hill) Shields, was born June 9, 1957, in Osceola, Iowa. He left this life on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
Howard grew up on the family farm at Grand River. He graduated from Grand Valley High School in 1975. His first job was also his last; he worked at Hy-Vee his whole working career. He started as a stock boy and over the years was able to work in any department in the Lamoni, Iowa store. He retired in November of 2016, due to health reasons.
Howard was married to Pam Lynn Driskill in 1980. They were blessed with two daughters, Heather and Haley. On September 25, 2004, he married Nanette Durega Lisondra in Lamoni, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, Max and Larabeth.
In his free time, Howard was an avid hunter and fisherman. He hunted deer, elk, and turkey. He also loved doing anything outdoors. He was a talented woodworker. In the 1990’s he built and moved into his country dream home. He also built much of his and Nanette’s furniture. He loved spending time with his family, gardening and mushroom hunting together. They traveled to the Philippines to see Nanette’s family. He called his wife, “Dear” and she called him “Buck”.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Pearl and Nelson Shields and Ben and Cecelia Hill and his dad, Edgar Shields. Survivors include his wife, Nanette Shields of Grand River; children, Heather and Nathan Reese and Haley and Derek Chocolate, all of Osceola, Iowa and Max Shields and Larabeth Shields, both of Grand River; four grandchildren, Chandler, Amber, Hunter, Somaya, and Deriana; his mother, Beth Shields of Lamoni, Iowa; brothers, Francis and Debbie Shields of Ellston, Iowa and Will and Becky Shields of Creston, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home at 4 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018, with Pastor Woodie Ladnier officiating.
