Horace A. Johnston, “Andy,” age 77, died on Friday, April 6, 2018 in San Antonio, TX. Andy was born in Diagonal, IA on August 10, 1940, to Robert and Floretta Johnston, but was largely raised by his grandparents, Horace and Martha Johnston, who he had great affection for. He was one of four siblings, to include himself, William Leighton (deceased), Dianne (Jack) Hill, and Suzi (Tooter) Weaver.
Andy had a prosperous career in the civil service, primarily with the United States Air Force. In 1992, he was honored with the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service – the highest civilian award the Air Force can bestow upon a civilian – for his ground-breaking work in communications and technology.
He is preceded in death by his committed and magnificent wife of fifty-three years, Joyce (Caldwell) Johnston, and survived by their devoted daughters, Julie (Kent) Hobbs and Susan (Scott) Spence, their son, Michael Johnston, and their loving granddaughters, Jessie Spence, Madison “Maddy” Hobbs, and Kathryn “Katy” Hobbs. He is also survived by his second wife of almost two years, Eileen Johnston.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Officianting will be Father David Polich.
Andy will be buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers memorial will go to the Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
Pallbearers will be: Mike Johnston, Scott Spence, Kent Hobbs, Bob Jones, Lyle Hobbs and Brian Hobbs.
