NORMAN DEAN GREENLAND

Norman Dean Greenland, age 88, of Grand River, Iowa, the son of Harland Gerald and Martha Frances (Moore) Greenland, was born March 26, 1930, in Decatur County, Iowa. He died at his home on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018.
Dean grew up mostly in the Grand River, Iowa area. Following graduation from Grand River High School with the Class of 1949, he worked on the family farm and played baseball for the town team in Grand River. In October of 1952, Dean joined the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Okinawa and his most significant duty assignment was in the Company H 7th Cavalry Regiment APO 201. He was also a pitcher for his Army team. After his honorable discharge in October of 1954, Dean went to work at the Maytag factory in Newton, Iowa before returning to the family farm. On November 3, 1956, Dean and Norma Marie Binning were united in marriage, recently having their 62nd anniversary. They were blessed with three sons, Monte, Kim, and Gerry.
In addition to growing crops, Dean loved raising cattle and selling breeding bulls. He was a member of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, past member of the American Legion, and the Iowa Ski Club. In his free time, Dean and the family enjoyed water and snow skiing, biking, and watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He and Norma rode Ragbrai between 1974 and the 1980’s. They also traveled the United States, Canada, and Switzerland.
Preceding him in death were his parents; stillborn granddaughter, Graysen Greenland in 2012; sister, Patsy Clausen in 1977; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Clausen and Jack Kuhn; and sister-in-law, Pat Greenland. Survivors include his wife, Norma Greenland of Grand River; children, Monte and Kelly Greenland of Grand River, Kim and Dara Greenland of Mount Ayr, Iowa, and Gerry and Brenda Greenland of Grand River; eight grandchildren, Jordan Greenland, Trevor Greenland, Abigayle Godfrey, Kelbey Greenland, Hudsen Greenland, Austin Greenland, Alexis Greenland, and Aubrianna Greenland; brothers, Max Greenland of Grand River and Danny and Kathy Greenland of Waterloo, Indiana; sister, Betty Kuhn of Fort Collins, Colorado; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2018, with Pastor Rick Hawkins officiating. Burial was in the Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to the Grand River Community Center in Dean’s memory.
