DOROTHY LEA HUGHES

Dorothy Lea (Wright) Hughes was born July 14, 1936 to David James and Mary L. (Mallory) Wright in Russell, Iowa. She graduated from Russell High School.
On August 28 of 1960, Dorothy was united in marriage to Arlen Franklin Hughes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived a short time in Kellerton before moving to Mount Ayr where she spent the rest of her life.
To this union were born three children: Russell Santford, Mari Gay and Susan Kay.
Dorothy worked for the Elite Dress Shop in Chariton, Bankers Life in Des Moines, Small’s Coral in Mount Ayr, Athena’s Cards and Gifts in Mount Ayr, LaVel’s Dress Shop in Mount Ayr and Mount Ayr Health Care Center over the years.
Dorothy participated in various local clubs. Current years she was most active with Eastern Star, PEO, and DAR. She also loved going to morning coffee with a group of special lady friends. As they ran out of places to meet that early of a morning, she began going to the Senior Center for activities. And, once a week she would join a group of ladies for afternoon sodas at Jamie’s Coffee Mill. Her social activities kept her busy.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kellerton. Her church family was very important to her.
Dorothy passed away at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center on December 24, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David and Jack Wright and husband, Arlen.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Russell Hughes (wife Janice) of Creston, Mari Hughes of Mount Ayr and Susan Andersen of Eagle River, Alaska; three grandchildren, Jaclyn Nicole Hughes, Eric Earl Andersen and Jennifer Lea Hughes; one brother, Charles Wright.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the United Methodist Church of Kellerton, Iowa.
Officianting was Rev. June Nolte-Davis.
Organist was Justin Akers.
Hymns were “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Going Home”.
Burial was in Maple Row Cemetery in Kellerton, Iowa.
Memorials are to the Mount Ayr Public Library.
