After weeks of being hidden within a make-shift shelter, unveiling of the “Peggy Whitson Rock” on the southwest corner of the Mount Ayr square will take place Saturday, April 6 at 4 p.m.
The public is invited to the ceremony honoring NASA astronaut and Ringgold County native Peggy Whitson, who holds a number of American space flight records and was the first female commander of the International Space Station.
While scheduling conflicts will likely prevent Whitson herself from attending the ceremony, honored guests at the unveiling will include artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, Peggy’s parents Beth and Keith Whitson and other local dignitaries.
The original date of the unveiling was postponed from February due to inclement weather. Organizers say the upcoming unveiling will take place rain or shine.
More details of the event will be released closer to April 6.
