VERNA MAE MARTIN

Verna Mae Martin, 82 of Mount Ayr, IA passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019 at her home with her family at her side.
Verna was born on August 17, 1936 in Ringgold County to Arlo and Ethel Dillenburg. She grew up on a farm in various locations in Ringgold and Union County and graduated from Arispe in 1954.
On January 16, 1955 Verna was united in marriage to Robert Martin at the Methodist Church in Arispe, along with her sister Donna and Bob’s best friend Kenneth. To this union three daughters were born, Peggy, Barbara and Beth.
Bob and Verna farmed for several years around the Mount Ayr area and she worked by his side.
Verna was an active 4-H leader for nine years and often guided grandchildren in projects. She worked at the Dari Sweet for 25 years, read meters for REC for 20 years, wrote Caledonia news for several years and was a faithful blood donor for many years.
She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, square dancing, gardening, babysitting her grandkids and hosting many family dinners.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Peggy (Jerry) Overholser, Barbara (Steve) Clark, Beth (Roger) Elliott; grandchildren, Brenda (Sheldon) Comer, Lesa (John) Darrah, Jeff (Lindsey) Overholser, Angie (George) Thurman, April Hentges, Andy (Danica) Clark, Randi Elliott, Jessica (Chris) Christensen; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Jim Dillenburg, and friend, Linda; sisters, Janis Danels, Donna Howell, Lois Baker, Mary Ellen Dillenburg; sisters-in-law, Alice Dillenburg, Lila Dillenburg, Betty Dillenburg, Mary (Jim) Harris, Doris Todd; brother-in-law, Howard Martin, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; great granddaughter, Faith; brothers, Burl, Duane, Bob and Marvin.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, IA.
Officiating was Rev. Mel Ammon and Pastor Bill Armstrong.
Music played was “Go Rest High On That Mountain”, “The Old Rugged Cross”, “In The Garden” and “Dancing In The Sky”.
Casketbearers were Jeffrey Overholser, Chris Christensen, Sheldon Comer, John Darrah, George Thurman and Andy Clark.
Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Overholser, Steve Clark, Roger Elliott, Jerry Dillenburg, Kraig Pennington and Greg Baker.
Burial was at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, IA.
Memorials are to the Ringgold County 4-H.
