LAVERNE MARIAN GLENDENNING

LaVerne Marian Glendenning, daughter of Melvin and Ida (Bittner) Smith was born September 8, 1932 at Fontanelle, IA. LaVerne always referred to Fontanelle as “God’s country”. She attended and graduated from Fontanelle High School. LaVerne went on to graduate from Creston Community College with a teaching degree. She taught at Diagonal Community School. LaVerne also worked for as a switch board operator at the Mount Ayr telephone company.
On December 22, 1951, LaVerne married Lloyd H. Glendenning in Fontanelle, IA.
LaVerne enrolled in Graceland University and earned a B.S. degree in 1976. She worked nearly 33 years for the Ringgold County Department of Human Services helping families and protecting children.
LaVerne partnered with Velda Pierson and they owned and operated LaVel’s Dress Shop in Mount Ayr for several years; later becoming LaVerne’s Boutique.
LaVerne enjoyed racing and was very supportive of Lloyd, Paul and car #33. LaVerne and Lloyd loved dancing and following big band music. She loved her grandchildren and was a chauffeur for them on dentist trips and other occasions. She’ll be remembered as a collector of dolls and cookbooks.
LaVerne passed away July 1, 2019 at the Ringgold County Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Norma (Dick) Bolton; nephews, Jim Bolton and Larry Bolton; brother-in-law, Max (Donna) Glendenning.
LaVerne is survived by her husband Lloyd of Mount Ayr; sons, Paul (Cease Olson) Glendenning of Mount Ayr and Todd (Angie) Glendenning of Redding; grandchildren, Kelsey (Kody) Larsen of Ankeny, Jake Glendenning of Prairie Village, KS, Hannah Glendenning and Blair Glendenning of Redding, Tya Wilson of Corning; great grandsons, Makade and Liam Wilson; Lywanda Case of Mount Ayr, whom she thought of as a daughter; niece, Kathi (Ed) Christensen of Greenfield, IA.
Memorials are in her name to be decided later.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, IA.
Officiating was Pastor Bill Armstrong and memories by Hannah Glendenning.
Musicians were Nancy Sackett, Mary Davenport and Melanie Knapp.
Special songs were “In The Garden”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”.
Casketbearers were Max Harden, Biff Harden. Bob Swartwood, Dick Elliott, Brad Elliott and  Dennis Elliott.
Honorary pallbearers were Past and Current Glendenning Employees, Roland Buck, Larry Brown, Mike Pierson and Brent Wurster.
Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr, IA.
