Van Meter 28, MA 0
The Raiders fell to a ranked Van Meter Bulldog team Friday night by a score of 28-0, but the score doesn’t tell the story.
The Bulldogs scored late in the first quarter on an Ian Abrahamson three-yard run, followed up by the point after to go up 7-0, where the score stood until the fourth, which seemed to stun the number one team in the state.
The next 21 points didn’t come until the fourth when Abrahamson found nine yards for a score followed by Anthony Potthoff finding an open Cody Coffman for 17 yards and the final touchdown came on a Dalten Van Pelt run from three yards out.
The Raiders were unable to find paydirt, getting close with the ball on the two but unable to punch it in for six, instead losing their only fumble of the night to give Van Meter another shot.
The Raiders were 10-of-22 in the passsing game, for 79 yards and found 75 yards on the ground in 31 attempts.
The Bulldogs kept to the smashmouth football they know, running 47 times for 254 yards and completing four-of-eight passes for 86 yards.
Mount Ayr was able to make the Bulldogs work for every score, creating long drives off the foot of punter Dawson Frost who pinned the ball inside the 20, with one bouncing out at the two-yard line prompting an “Are you kidding me?!” from the Bulldog return man.
The Raiders were in top form Friday night and look to continue playing well as they face Adair Casey-Guthrie Center in their final regular season game of the year.
The Raiders fell from sixth to 12th in the RPI rankings, which determine playoff appearances. The top 16 in each class move on to the post season.
Currently, ACGC sits at 13th and Mount Ayr will need a win in order to have any shot at a playoff berth.
