To the editor:
As we pause to remember and honor America’s veterans, here in Mount Ayr, we can be proud of the beautiful Ringgold County Veterans Memorial.
This beautifully carved black granite monument and the benches that surround it, honors the service of veterans from the Civil War through Desert Storm. Carved onto the black granite are the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Many families in this country like the McCain’s have a long history of military service.
The family of five star general Douglas MacArthur has had its share of military heroes, his father Arthur MacArthur won the Medal of Honor in the Civil War. But for the Trump family not so much. In 100 years of history, no Trump has ever served this country in the military. The family mantra seems to be that the world is divided into winners and losers and only losers put their lives on the line to serve their country.
Winners profit by taking advantage of the situation and make money from war. As a way of explaining why he pulled American troops from Northern Syria, abandoning our Kurdish allies paving the way for Turkey’s invasion, Trump said, “the Kurds did not help us in World War II.” News flash, neither did Fred Trump who profited from the war by getting contracts to build barracks and apartments for the U.S. Navy and over charging the government. In 1954, “Trump was investigated by a U.S. Senate committee for profiteering from public contracts, including overstating his Beach Haven building by 3.7 million dollars.” As they say, the apple does not fall far from the tree. In 1964, 18 year old Donald had to register for the draft. He was prime draft material from 1964-1972. “He was unmarried, with no dependents, and not engaged in any employment which carried occupational exemptions.” From 1968-1972, like many others, he had a college student deferment. Upon graduation in 1972, he had 18 months of eligibility left. That is when he managed to get a medical deferment for a minor condition, bone spurs. The next generation of Trumps, Don Jr. and Eric, both able bodied, in the family tradition of regarding those who serve in the military as losers, have not volunteered to put their lives on the line for this country. Who knew bone spurs, their alleged condition, was genetic?. They love guns, however, becoming big game trophy hunters, going to Africa in 2012 to kill elephants, cheetahs, and leopards with high powered rifles from the back of a truck, then proudly posing with their grisly trophies such as the bloody tail of an elephant. As they well know, unlike the Taliban, ISIS, or any other of America’s foes, the animals can’t shoot back.
