Red Oak 71, Mt. Ayr 41
The Raiderettes had their first game Monday night against the Red Oak Tigers.
“Red Oak will probably be our toughest opponent all year. They were tall, long and very athletic,” said coach Thad Streit. “They are a pretty good team. On the other hand, I was disappointed in our execution on offense.”
Red Oak, ranked fifth in class 3A, started the game off hot, outscoring Mount Ayr 23-8 in the first.
Throughout the first half, Red Oak saw seven shots from 3-point territory, kickstarting their night, along with Mount Ayr struggling to grab any rebounds, most going in favor of the Tigers.
The Raiderettes started gaining traction after halftime, but the Red Oak attack proved too strong. The Raiderettes made up some ground, but were still outscored 31-20 in the second half.
Sophomore Maddie Stewart led the Raiderettes in scoring with 12 points coming off four-of-11 buckets, including one from beyond the arc. Stewart also was three-of-five from the freethrow line.
Junior Alexa Anderson was under the glass for Mount Ayr and had six rebounds, two of which were offensive. Anderson had one steal as well.
As a team, Mount Ayr shot 32.7 percent from the field and recorded 18 total rebounds.
The black mark on the team was giving up 21 turnovers to the Tigers.
“We have a lot to work on,” said coach Streit. “We are not going to let this one game bring us down.”
The Raiderettes travel to Osceola next Monday for a battle with Clarke at 6:15 p.m.
