The Mount Ayr junior high wrestlers had their first wrestling meet Friday, December 6 as they traveled to Maryville for a meet with Maryville as well as teams from South Harrison, Plattsburgh and St. Joe Robideaux. It was a good night for the young Raiders as they won 7 of their 11 matches. Brock Shaha had a great night as won all 3 of his matches including two by pin. He started with a 26 second pin over Brenden Jones of Robideaux. His second victory was a 9 to 0 major decision over Dylan Masters of Maryville. In this match Brock scored takedowns in each of the first two periods and scored a reversal and a near fall in the third period to reach his final score. In his third match Brock scored a second period fall over Rylee Ellis of Plattsburgh. Brock scored 6 takedowns and a near fall before mercifully ending the match with the pin.
Preston Fleharty also had a great night with 3 victories. He pinned Colton Berry in 28 seconds in his first match. Preston won 12 to 5 over Tanner Turner of Maryville in his second match. He had 2 takedowns, 2 near falls and 2 reversals to achieve his final score. Preston dominated Preston Adwell of Maryville in his final match. Preston scored 2 takedowns, a reversal and 2 near falls to achieve a ten to one victory.
Chris Wyant won one match and lost two in his debut as a Raider wrestler. He lost 4 to 0 in his first match against Phalynn Edwards of Robideaux. He was pinned in his second match by Chase Meyer of Maryville. Chris handled Morgan Nible of South Harrison in his final match. He scored in every period with two takedowns and a reversal on his way to the 6 to 0 victory.
It was a tough night for Derek Jones in his wrestling debut as he lost both of his matches by fall. Both of his opponents were more experienced than he was. Derek should improve as the season progresses.
The jh wrestlers were right back at it on Monday, December 8. They went to Osceola for a meet with Clarke, Albia, I 35 and Moravia. It was a strong performance for the young Raiders as they won 6 out of 8 matches. Brock Shaha won both of his matches by fall. In his first match , he took Riley Jorgensen of I-35 to his back and scored a twenty second pin. His second victim was Cassius Henry of Clarke. Brock scored a takedown and a near fall in the first period. He scored a reversal and a near fall in the second period. In the third period Brock took Henry down and put him on his back. He was able to get the pin with 8 seconds remaining in the match.
Derek Jones celebrated his birthday with his first victory of the season. He defeated Nathan Coffman of Albia with a 9 to 7 decision. Derek had 4 takedowns and an escape to score his points. He lost his second match to Alex Shinn of Clarke. Shinn had a weight advantage over Jones and he used it to put Derek on his back to win by fall.
Preston Fleharty won both of his matches. His first match was a 10 to 8 decision over Bode Stanley of I-35. Both wrestlers scored a takedown and reversal in the first period, with Preston adding an escape and a near fall. He had a takedown in the second period to add to his lead. He hung on with an escape in the third period while giving up a takedown and back points to squeak out the victory. In his second match Preston put on a takedown clinic against Wyatt Dickerson of I-35 . Preston had 7 takedowns and a near fall before getting the third period pin.
Chris Wyant got pinned in first match against Isaac Salazar of Clarke. He rebounded with a pin of his own when he wrestled Grant Jones of I 35. It was the first pin for Chris this season.
. Coach Rodney Bastow stated he was well pleased with the boys performances. Even though we didn’t have a chance to practice, I thought we showed improvement from our first meet.
The jh wrestlers were in action again on Friday, December 13 as they traveled to winterset. It was a big meet with over 125 matches against much larger schools.
The other schools included winterset, Clarke, Carroll, Bondurant-Farrar,and Ballard.
Huxley. The Raiders found wins hard to come by as they only won 3 of their 8 matches.
Brock Shaha lost both of his matches decisively to Bondurant-Farrar wrestlers. He lost his first match to Reid Foster by a score of 10 to 1. It was a close match for the first two periods as Foster scored a pair of takedowns to one escape for Brock. In the third period Brock got reversed and turned to his back to account for the final score. Brock gave up ten pounds in his second match against Connor Fiser. It was too much weight and strength for Brock to overcome as he lost the match by a tech fall.
Derek Jones won one of his two matches. He defeated Cristobel Turroda of Perry in his first match by a score of 6 to 0. Derek scored a takedown in every period to get the victory. He lost his second match to Cameron Peplinski of Carroll by fall.
Preston Fleharty split his two matches. He lost to Rhett Hedrick of Bondurant-Farrar by fall in his first match. He won by tech fall in his second match against Trent Paxton of Bondurant-Farrar. Preston had a takedown and 2 near falls in the first period. He added a takedown in the second period. He finished the match with a reversal and another near fall in the third period.
Chris Wyant also split his two matches. He had a 26 second pin over Angel Coldron in his first match. In his second match Chris was pinned by Erick Escobar of Perry.
The middle school wrestlers are finished now until after the holiday break.
