Sam Stewart
Mt. Ayr 78, SEW 35
If you read the Record-News or follow Mount Ayr Raiderette sports, chances are you know the name Sam Stewart.
Stewart has been the leading scorer for the Raiderettes for the past couple of years, leading the team to multiple victories.
Friday night against Southeast Warren, Stewart reached the 1,000 point club, just before halftime with her sister Maddie on the assist and by the end of the night, Stewart had broken the school record for points in a game with 45 total, hitting 21-of-24 buckets and going three-for-four at the free-throw-line.
“It feels indescribable and something I’ll never forget,” said Stewart about the achievement. “But I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my coaches, teammates and all the support from our community.”
Stewart joins an elite group in the 1,000 point club, joining the ranks of Melissa Eighmy, Tess Myer, Becca Pennington and Kelcie Shields.
The 45 point game record that was broken, is a record for 5v5 basketball and beats Tess Myer’s previous record of 40.
“What a night for Sam Stewart. She got her 1,000th point right before halftime and then she broke the school record for 45 points in a game,” said coach Thad Streit. “But we can’t forget about the teammates that got her the ball. We have to remember it is a team game and Sam would not have gotten those points without her teammates. We are playing extremely hard and the girls are giving a great effort, but we have to play smarter and not foul. I am also proud of our chemistry right now.”
The Raiderettes would go on to defeat Southeast Warren 78-35, scoring over 20 points in each quarter but the fourth in which they scored 12, for a Pride of Iowa win.
With Stewart hitting the 45 point mark, there were plenty of assists to go around, with the Raiderettes reaching 26 total. MaKayla Jones was responsible for nine of those to lead the team in assists.
The Raiderettes also forced 25 turnovers, with Sam Stewart leading the way with nine, while Channler Henle had four.
