The Raiderettes had a tall order to fill Friday night with a contest against the Martensdale-St. Mary Blue Devils. Starting off strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Blue Devils 20-11, Mount Ayr let up in the second, allowing the Blue Devils press defense to create turnovers and opportunities to score, closing the gap to 30-27 by halftime.
Heading into the locker room, the Raiderettes were excited to be leading, but opening up the third, the Raiderettes fell behind and Martensdale-St. Mary’s led 38-37. The Raiderettes pulled back ahead early in the fourth on a Sam Stewart bucket, followed by a Jaycee Knight layup that gave the Raiderettes a three point lead. The Raiderettes stayed just out of reach for the rest of the quarter to win the contest, 50-47.
Sam Stewart led the team with 25 points, just three points shy of the All-Time scoring record at MACHS.
“What a heck of a game between two very good teams,” said coach Thad Streit. “We discussed that both teams are going to make runs and to stay the course. We started out hot and the Martensdale-St. Marys made some runs, but when it came down to it, you could tell our girls lift weights, you could tell we were in shape and you can tell our girls have guts. We made plays on both ends down the stretch to get this W all because our girls have guts!”
