Last Friday night, two Pride of Iowa powerhouses met in Mount Ayr. The Martensdale-St. Mary’s Blue Devils, despite having school called off that morning due to weather.
The Blue Devils came out strong, outscoring the Raiders 18-5. The Raiders kicked it up in the second, scoring 14 points, but allowed 15 points heading into halftime.
“You couldn’t ask for a worse start,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “You would think the school that had school today, with kids up early and had things going today would have started better than the other today, unfortunately that’s basketball sometimes. They shot the ball real well and we just didn’t.”
Mount Ayr went into halftime trailing Martensdale-St. Mary’s 33-19. The second-half was the same story for the Raiders, scoring only eight points to the Blue Devil’s 15. The Raiders led in the fourth but couldn’t close the deficit, falling 62-45 in what was their first loss of the season.
In the loss, Dawson Frost scored 12 points to lead the Raiders, while Cayden Lambert scored 11.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s protected the ball throughout the night, turning the ball over five times.
“This will be a good experience for us. We needed to be humbled a little bit,” said Ruggles. “We needed to have that loss and get away from the undefeated stuff. We have a district we think we could do really well in.”
The Raiders have been put into District 13 with Bedford, Clarinda Academy, Diagonal, East Mills, Essex, Fremont-Mills, Lenox and Sidney.
The Raiders fall to 12-1 on the season before facing an undefeated Van Meter (15-0) team on Tuesday.

Prior to the Martensdale-St. Mary’s loss, the Raiders had a big win over Lenox on Tuesday.
The Raiders saw Dawson Frost with 15 points, Cayden lambert with 12 and Payton Weehler with 10 points.
Mount Ayr started out strong, going ahead 33-5 and not letting up as the Raider lead climbed throughout the night.
The Raiders created 11 turnovers and had four blocks while only comitting eight fouls.
Frosts 15 points secured his spot in the 1,000 point club as he now sets his sights on a state tournament bid.
“It feels good. First off we would like a conference championship and going to the state championship,” said Frost. “For a personal goal, I’d like to go after the school record.”
Coach Ruggles was relieved that Frost got the 1,000 point off his back before the matchup in Lenox.
“My worst fear was the way it was mapping out was Martensdale-St. Mary’s. You don’t want a kid going into a big game thinking about his 1,000th, even though it’s a team game and he is a great team player, it’s on your mind,” said coach Ruggles. “I was telling him it is a great accomplishment but there is a lot more to get. He enjoys the 1,000th point, but he is looking for a conference and district championship.”
