Wrestlers make Regionals for first time since ‘98

Mount Ayr grapplers had a nice outing in Truro last Saturday during sectionals.
With seven teams in the tournament, all 11 Raider wrestlers placed in the top six with Drew Ehlen, Bryce Shaha, Trae Ehlen and Jaydon Knight placing first. Jarrett Webb and Donovan Morales placed second. Those six wreslters will advance to Districts February 15 in Pleasantville.
As a team the Raiders finished second, scoring 177 points while Interstate-35 scored 224 to take the top spot on the podium.
With the second place finish, the Raiders advanced to Regional Team Duals in Avoca, the first appearance of Mount Ayr since 1998, ending a 22 year drought.
Match Results
106 – Drew Ehlen (33-2) received a first round by before defeating Ty Wood of Wayne by a pin in 38 seconds. In the championship match, Ehlen defeated Dalton Ervin of Moravia, pinning him in 3:29.
113 – Jarrett Webb (22-15) placed second to advance to districts, defeating Gentry Walston of Lynnville-Sully by pin. Webb was defeated by Ryan Steinlage of I-35 in the championship match to finish second.
120 – Bryce Shaha (20-2) saw a first round bye before pinning Caleb Rea of Lynnville-Sully in 45 seconds. In Shaha’s next match, he would win by a five to one decision over Jarryn Stephens of East Union.
126 – Payton Fleharty (14-17) finished fifth at his weight, going three rounds with Tryston Palmer of I-35 before being defeating. In his consolation match, Fleharty placed fifth after pinning Erik Allen of East Union in 55 seconds.
132 – Trey Fooken (10-19) placed sixth overall in his weight class. Fooken was pinning by Trent Terrell of Wayne before being pinning in the conoslation against Cole Wimber of East Union.
138 – Trae Ehlen (34-4) took first place in his bracket. Ehlen had a bye to start the day befre pinning Brodey Johnson of Lynnville-Sulley. In the championship match, Ehlen got the fall in the second period over Chase Baker. Ehlen’s pin came after three minutes.
145 – Jaydon Knight (20-5) took the top step of the podium in the 145 pound weight class after defeating Shane Lear of East Union in 37 seconds in his first match of the day. Knight would then face Connor Golston of Moravia. Knight would go on to get the pin over Golston after suffering an injury to the arm he fractured earlier in the season. Knight would go on to face JT Rowe from Southeast Warren in the championship match. Knight got the pin after a 5:42 battle.
152 – Talal Rahahleh (8-20) lost both of his matches throughout the day, but placed fourth. Rahahleh lost to Tanner Dierking of Southeast Warren and then to Ethan Martin of Moravia by fall after 1:59.
170 – Andi Gonzales (17-19) placed third in his bracket after losing a nine to two decision to Curtis Jacobe of I-35, his only match of the night.
220 – Donovan Morales (22-11) placed second overall in his bracket. Morales faced Lane Mathis of Lynville-Sully in his first match, getting a pin early. In his next match, Morales was pinned by Sam Vonnahme of I-35 and Morales came out second after Lane Mathis fell in his consolation bracket.
285 – Braydon Swietlik (3-13) fell to Chad Kent of Wayne to finish third in a three-man bracket.
