Mt. Ayr 71, CA 19
The Mount Ayr Raider basketball team started the post-season with a dominating win over the Clarinda Academy Eagles.
The Raiders only allowed the Eagles three points in the first half, while they scored 33, most of which came from Dawson Frost who also broke the schools All-Time scoring record that was held by 1993 graduate Drew Larsen.
After the game, Frost was recognized and presented with a golden trophy ball.
“It’s a lot of hardwork that pays off and having good teammates, it helps a lot,” said Frost on his record.
“It’s a testament to him on how much work he has put in,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “He has had so much spring basketball, the workouts he puts in, the track he runs, the weights he lifts. He is a solid kid.”
The Raiders had not seen the floor in nine days.
“There were some cobwebs to blow-out for sure,” said Frost. “I air-balled my first shot and thought woah, I haven’t played this in awhile, but I think everyone felt like that. It was nice to see Jordan [McAlexander] get his first points as well.”
Frost led the team with 14 points, while Cole Clymer followed with 11 and Isaac Grose scored 10.
Senior Jordan McAlexander went two-for-two at the line to score his first points ever as a Raider basketball player, joining the team for the first time this season.
With his first bucket, the student section and team bench went wild, chanting his name. It was all smile from there.
The Raiders advanced to the next round and hosted Sidney on Tuesday. The game had not been played at time of press.
“Overall it was a great night,” said coach Ruggles. “It’s good for us here, now it’s serious, let’s get ready.”
