Social distancing and other COVID restrictions have caused the Clearfield Lions Fourth of July celebration and the Ringgold County Fair to scale back their schedules of events this year.
Clearfield 4th
Only one event is scheduled for Friday, July 3. The truck and tractor pull will get underway at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults with children 12 and under admitted free.
Events for Saturday, July 4 have also been cut back.
The sand volleyball tournament will start the day at 9 a.m.
A bags tournament will take place at 4 p.m.
A dunk tank will be open beginning at 5 p.m.
The annual parade will get started at 8 p.m. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Heroes on the Front Lines.”
One bright spot in this year’s celebration is the huge fireworks display that organizers say will be twice as big as last year’s. The display will light the sky at 9:45 p.m. The intro to the fireworks will be a special display courtesy of the Dave England family.
Vendors and food trucks of all varieties are invited to come for both evenings.
Attendees are encouraged to practice social distancing.
County fair
In spite of coronavirus restrictions that have caused the cancellation of the Iowa State Fair as well as several county fairs around the state, the Ringgold County Fair board has announced its schedule of events for this year’s modified fair which runs from July 8-12.
In all, 46 county fairs have either curtailed their events or canceled altogether as of June 10.
The 4-H Building will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 8 for club members to drop off their exhibits. Each club will have a one-hour assigned time to drop off their exhibits.
Booths will still be available in the Commercial Building for rent. The Commercial Building will be open Wednesday, July 8-Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Booths will need to be torn down by 5 p.m. Saturday, July 11.
Activity for the public gets underway Wednesday at 5 p.m. with the Fair Kick Off Supper.
Kristen and Justin Akers are operating the food stand this year, and they plan to offer a Kick Off special of a pork loin sandwich, chips, and drink for $5 or a hot dog, chips, and drink for $3.
Parade entries will begin lining up in the high school parking lot prior to the start of the parade at 6 p.m.
The traditional Bill Riley Talent Show and queen/princess coronation have been cancelled for this year.
The 4-H and FFA poultry show begins at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 9, followed by the 4-H/FFA rabbit show at 6 p.m.
More livestock shows are scheduled for Friday, July 10, including the 4-H/FFA swine show at 8 a.m., 4-H/FFA goat show at 1 p.m., the 4-H/FFA sheep show at 5 p.m. and 4-H/FFA horse show at 6 p.m.
Gone are the rodeo, mutton bustin’ and other popular grandstand entertainment for this year.
Saturday will see the 4-H bucket calf and bucket calf plus one show at 9 a.m.
The ever popular Pee Wee Wrangler show gets underway at 11 a.m. This year the show is open to Ringgold County residents only.
At 11:30 a.m. is the 4-H bucket calf show followed by the beef show at noon.
The day’s activities wrap up with the Ringgold County Cattlemen Contest at 4 p.m.
