Details have been announced for the Commencement Exercises for the Mount Ayr class of 2020.
The event will take place Sunday, July 19 at 1 p.m. on the high school football field.
Chairs for the graduates will be placed in four rows on the track and football field, spaced at six-foot intervals. Both the home and visitor bleachers are available for seating of family and friends, but those in attendance are requested to practice social distancing between family groups. There is no limitation on the number of people who may attend the ceremony.
The podium will be placed on the west side of the students, and the board president, superintendent, and principal will be seated to the right of the podium.
Seniors are to arrive on campus at 12 noon and park in the south lot. A group picture will be taken in the visitor bleachers with students social distanced and standing. Students will be handed their diplomas and flowers at that time, but flowers will be distributed to parents following the graduation ceremony. Cords and academic medals will also be handed out. As they file out of the bleachers, each graduate will have an individual photo taken in front of the school backdrop on the visitor’s side of the field.
At 12:45 p.m. the seniors will proceed down the hill to the goalpost at the west end of the football field, and at 1 p.m. they will begin the graduation march to their chairs located in front of the home bleachers as the processional is played over the loudspeakers.
Principal Bill Huntington will begin the ceremony by welcoming the Class of 2020 and their family and friends. He will then introduce salutatorian Kaley Adams and valedictorian Jaycee Knight, who will give their keynote addresses.
Following the speakers, Huntington will present the honor students and provide individual recognition to each member of the senior class. When each name is called, the senior and his or her parents are asked to stand to be recognized.
The ceremony will end with the official presentation of the Mount Ayr graduating Class of 2020.
In the case of inclement weather, the students will remain social distanced in the gym while audience members remain in their cars. The ceremony will resume on the football field after the rain has stopped.
