The baseball season came to a close for the Mount Ayr Raiders last Tuesday, July 21.
The Raiders traveled to Creston to take on the Martensdale-St. Mary’s Blue Devils for a bid in the State Tournament.
The Raider bats started strong against pitcher Carson Elbert, gaining one run in the first.
The Blue Devils faced Mount Ayr pitcher Briar Knapp, and were able to rope off five runs in the first to take the lead.
Mount Ayr scored their last two runs in the second to total out at three runs.
Martensdale would put up six more throughout the course of the contest to end the Raider season and advance to State.
The Raiders saw eight hits against the Martensdale mound, which included seven singles and a double with two RBI.
Jaixen Frost led the bats with two hits and an RBI in four at-bats.
Scoring was Cayden Lambert, Adler Shay and Erik Trujillo.
Briar Knapp pitched three innings, allowing seven runs on four hits, walking six and striking out two batters.
Jaydon Knight came in to relieve Knapp for 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits, two walks and one strikeout.
Dawson Swank finished the night with two hits allowed, one walk and one strikeout.
The Raiders were plagued with errors on the night, committing five total and recording 18 putouts on 29 total chances.
Martensdale recorded 11 runs on nine hits and 10 RBI.
The fielders committed three errors and had 21 putouts on 30 total chances.
Blue Devil pitchers allowed three runs, seven hits and struck out 10 batters while walking only one.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s would go on to play in the first round of the State Tournament and was defeated, 3-2, by Kingsley-Pierson.
Briar Knapp and Jaixen Frost were selected to First Team All-Conference, while Kolben Klommhaus received an honorable mention.
