The Mount Ayr wrestling Raiders have been off to a phenomenal start, picking up where they left off last season.
Starting off with a dual at Shenandoah, the Raiders defeated the Mustangs 42-12.
The Raiders got their first points with Keaton White receiving a forfeit at 160 pounds, however, Shenandoah took them right back with a 220 pound win with Jacob Wolfe over Mount Ayr’s Chris Wyant with a fall in 32 seconds.
The next few weight classes received forfeits, including Drew Ehlen, Jarrett Webb and Joshua West.
Next up was Bryce Shaha who defeated Jade Spangler in 2:49 with a fall.
Payton Fleharty fell to Owen Laughlin after 5:47 before Trae Ehlen and Jaydon Knight won their matches by falls in 39 and 49 seconds, respectively.
In junior varsity action, the Raiders saw Deann Wyant wrestle Cameron Johnston from Southwest Valley.
She lost the first match by a fall before winning the second by injury default.
Coach Riley
Invitational
Mount Ayr participated in the Coach Riley Invitational on December 5 and swept the competition.
As a team, the Raiders scored 151.5 points to secure the top spot and win the tournament over Clarinda (126) and Pleasantville (113) to round out the top three.
Drew Ehlen placed first at 106 pounds to score the team 21.5 points. Ehlen received a first round bye before winning by decision over Tegan Slaybaugh of AC/GC by a 9-2 decision.
Ehlen took first place, defeating Kaden Whipp of Clarinda by a technical fall.
Deann Wyant placed fifth overall after falling to Landon Klobnak of Nodaway Valley.
Jarrett Webb saw improvement this season, sitting at 5-0 and placing first to score 22 points for the team.
Webb defeated Adyson Lundquist of Southwest Valley by fall in 3:07 before winning by decision over Clarke’s Ethan Domina, 8-7.
Joshua West at 120 pounds placed fifth and scored five team points.
West fell to Creston/O-M’s Brice Hull.
Preston Fleharty placed sixth overall, falling to Luke Spaur of Knoxville before defeating Dalton Kitzman of Bedford/Lenox. Fleharty ended his day with a loss to Brandon Briley of Creston/O-M by a fall.
Bryce Shaha took first place and scored 24 team points in the 132 pound weight class.
Shaha defeated Brandon Briley after a 5:20 match ended in a fall.
Michael Mayer fell to Shaha in 3:46 before Shaha took first place over Gunnar Larsen of AC/GC by a 6-3 decision.
Payton Fleharty took sixth place and added seven points to the Raiders total after falling to Kitt Lundy of Pleasantville.
Fleharty would then defeated Bedford/Lenox wrestler Keegan Smith by fall in 35 seconds, but Triston Barncastle of Creston/O-M defeated him by fall in 3:52.
Trae Ehlen took first place and 24 points at 145 pounds with a fall over Ely Rodriguez of Southwest Valley and Conner Fitzgerald of Bedford/Lenox.
In the first place match, Ehlen defeated Logan Jones of Central Decatur after a 5-0 decision.
Jaydon Knight took first place and 26 points with wins over Brayden Daly, Karson Downey and Cale Rowley.
Knight won every match by a fall.
Keaton White placed fifth overall and scored nine points in the 160 pound weight class.
White fell to KJ Fry of Clarke by fall before finishing the day out with a 4-3 decision win over Chris Aragon of Creston/O-M and Wayne Johnston of Knoxville by fall in one minute flat.
At 195 Braydon Swietlik scored two team points with a win over Savannah Sistad of Creston/O-M by a fall.
Swietlik fell to Tegan Carson of Central Decatur before losing a 12-2 major decision to Gage Rowley of Knoxville.
Chris Wyant placed fourth at 220 pounds and scored 11 team points after a forfeit from Dawson Marshall of Bedford/Lenox.
Wyant fell to Jake Smith of Clarke and Duncan Marshall of Bedford/Lenox.
