Mt. Ayr 54, SW 16
Mount Ayr made the 65 miles drive to Seymour to kick off the 2021 year with a little game of basketball.
The Raiderettes handled the rust from winter break well as they powered their way to a 54-16 win over the Seymour Warriors to improve to 8-1 on the season.
It took a little while to get the ball in the hoop, but MaKayla Jones struck first followed by a Rachel Sobotka shot from outside the arc.
Mount Ayr put up 11 points before Seymour was good on a three.
After one quarter, the Raiderettes were up 20-3.
The second quarter was a low scoring affair, though Mount Ayr still outscored Seymour, 10-4 to lead heading into halftime, 30-7.
The second half started off quick with a score from Maddie Stewart, but Seymour found points on the return.
Throughout the second half, Mount Ayr found Sobotka and Alexa Anderson who racked up points for the team as they led 47-14 after three.
With only a few minutes left in the contest, Mount Ayr’s bench were given the floor.
The Raiderettes finished out the night with a win to improve to 8-1 on the season before facing a tough Nodaway Valley team Tuesday night.
“We had film on Seymour but we knew they were down and had girls that were hurt,” said coach Thad Streit. “All last week we prepared and scrimmaged for what we thought Nodaway Valley would do.”
Nodaway Valley was recently ranked at number five in class 2A and sits at the top of the Pride of Iowa Conference, just above Mount Ayr.
“We did a fairly good job of finding who we were guarding, but our offense was kind of stale,” said Streit. “All of a sudden we started to click in the second half. We missed some shots underneath, but we had a lot of rebounds.”
The win helps the Raiderettes prepare for Nodaway Valley, which happened Tuesday night and was not completed before press time.
Full stats for Monday nights game were not available at press time.
