To the editor:
Early in January I visited my daughter and her family in Woodbine, Iowa, and had the opportunity to tour their new Community, Recreation, Education, and Wellness (CREW) Center.
It is a beautiful facility with so much to offer. The CREW Center is the result of a public-private partnership between the Woodbine Community School District, the City of Woodbine, and the community of Woodbine as a whole. The CREW mission is “to sustain our community through health and education.” The building is built next to their sports complex so is easily assessable to both the school and community.
The Crew Center is designed as a regional wellness center that includes a 6-lane competition pool, resistance pool and a zero-entry pool for children. It has a full-size gym, a large upper story fitness area with a walking track, and shower/locker facilities. In addition, they have a full-service daycare provider along with a new STEM education center. It will bring people to their community–some to visit and some will end up staying.
This would work here in Mt. Ayr. Woodbine is not a big town. In fact, it’s a little smaller than Mt. Ayr. Just like Mt. Ayr it’s located in a rural area, with lots of community pride. I encourage those organizations and individuals working on our local concepts to explore the facility either in person (about 150 miles) or virtually through one of the links listed at the end of this letter. If we are going to grow and breathe new life into our local area, we need something like this. No, we need this!
