Man shoots himself after pursuit

Authorities from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation are examining the car driven by Chance Newton Monday afternoon. After Newton shot himself during a pursuit, the car hit a tree in Kellerton.
According to a press release from the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, August 8 at 10:12 p.m., the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call indicating that Chance Newton had been in Kellerton, had displayed a gun in a threatening manner and had left the area in a vehicle.
Ringgold County deputies and other area law enforcement officers located and pursued the vehicle driven by Newton, who returned to Kellerton.
During the pursuit, Newton fired shots aat a pursuing deputy, striking the deputy’s vehicle.
The pursuit ended when Newton was shot by a self-inflicted gunshot wound while driving through the town. His vehicle then left the roadway and struck a tree. Newton was pronounced dead at the scene.
No law enforcement officers fired their weapons, and no officers were injured.
Assistance was provided to the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office by the Iowa State Patrol, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Leon Police Department, Lamoni Police Department, and the Ringgold County Hospital.
The Iowa Division of Criminal of Investigation is investigating this incident.
In a related incident, the Iowa Department of Public Safety released a report on a shooting in Decatur County.
According to the IDPS, at 10:44 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, a male called 911 to report that he had been shot along with a female occupant as they were traveling in a vehicle along county road J45 in Lamoni.
During the investigation, it was discovered that there was an ongoing dispute between Chance Newton and Joseph Vanderflught.
During an interview with law enforcement, Vanderflught stated that he fired upon a vehicle traveling on J45 because he thought it was the vehicle of Newton.
As a result, Vanderflught was charged with two counts of Attempted Murder. He was arrested without incident and is currently being held in the Decatur County Jail.
In the charging affidavits furnished by the IDPS, the occupants wounded by Vanderflught were identified as Heather Eggers of Lamoni and Kody Vogel of Lineville.
Eggers and Vogel were treated at the Ringgold County Hospital and transported to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Both were listed in stable condition.
Assistance was provided by the Iowa State Patrol, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office, the Leon Police Department and the Lamoni Police Department.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
