Raiders get Homecoming win over Vikings

It was Homecoming for the Raiders this past Friday night as they hosted the AHSTW Vikings.
Both teams entered the contest with a record of 1-2 and both looked to get back to .500.
The Raiders rushed their way to a win over the Vikings, racking up 208 yards on 42 attempts that was led by Austin Cole who rushed for 103 yards on 10 carries, while Adler Shay got the majority of the looks with 21 carries for 62 yards.
Cole scored two touchdowns on the night, while Shay scored one.
Cole had a unique beginning to his night.
During the pregame presentation of the colors, Cole’s dad, Adam, an Iowa State Patrolman, was part of the Iowa State Patrol Color Guard that presented the flag Friday night, a duty that is generally done by the Mount Ayr American Legion.
“There’s not too many teams, especially in A football, that get to have the State Patrol, let alone their dad, do that,” said Cole. “That’s really cool and a special moment during your senior Homecoming.”
Jaixen Frost added 44 yards to the offense through the air, completing six-of-nine passes, one of which went for the first score of the night to Jaydon Knight for three yards.
The Raiders scored once in every quarter, slowly chipping away at a tough Viking defense that forced five Raider punts and forced three fumbles and recovered two.
The Raiders scored one touchdown in every quarter, while allowing only one score by the Vikings.
Mount Ayr, however, attempted a two-point conversion on three of its four touchdowns.
The Raiders hadn’t attempted a field goal all season and with 2:51 remaining in the game, on a PAT attempt, Frost lined up at kicker and sent the ball through the uprights for the extra point.
The win improved the Raiders to 2-2 on the season as they head to Sidney on Friday night to face the 1-3 Cowboys.
“It feels great to win on Homecoming,” said Cole. “Especially senior year. This team, the sky is the limit. I think we are starting to really see it all come together.”
Coach Ryan Victor shared his sentiments about the contest, describing himself as a tough critic.
“I am a tough critic, so I only give them [the Raiders] for 3 1/3 quarters, but that was the best game we have put together, against another solid opponent,” said coach Victor. “We keep talking to our guys about being tough and we were tough today and they deserved this tonight.”
Coach Victor spoke on the work ethic of Austin Cole who was one of the players of the game for KMA radio.
“You know, AC had a great summer. He was there every day and that’s why he’s one of our captains,” said coach Victor. “He’s our big play guy. It’s great. We have a lot of guys that can get ahold of the ball, but no one is upset when someone else makes a play.”
