Stephen Michael Swank, 73, died at 1:11 p.m. on Friday, October 1, 2021, at the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Westwood, CA, surrounded by love from his son, Dan Swank, and his daughter, Hilary Swank.
Stephen (Steve) was born April 16, 1948, in Creston, IA, the son of Glen Swank and Marian (Allenspach) Swank.
He married Judy (Clough) Swank on September 10, 1966, and had two children, Daniel Lewis Swank on February 12, 1967 and Hilary Ann Swank on July 30, 1974.
He graduated from Mount Ayr High School, Class of 1967. Following graduation, he attended and graduated from Southwest Community College in Creston, IA, and then attended Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1969 during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS, Fairchild AFB, Spokane, WA, and March AFB, Riverside, CA.
He left the Air Force and moved his family to Lincoln, NE, where he attended the Lincoln School of Business and then the University of Nebraska, majoring in Business Administration and Accounting, where he graduated with a B.S. degree in 1976. He was also a member of the Nebraska Air National Guard (NANG). Upon graduation from the University, he became a Recruiter for the NANG under active duty for the U.S.A.F. He transferred to recruit for two separate units of the Washington Air National Guard (WANG) at Fairchild AFB, Spokane, WA, and later transferred to another WANG unit in Bellingham, WA. He returned to Fairchild AFB to become the Eastern Regional Lead Recruiter for the State of Washington. His last recruiter duty station was for the Oregon State Air National Guard, as the State Lead Recruiter in Portland, OR. He retired at the rank of SMSgt. Throughout his military career, he received numerous commendations and awards for his service to his country.
Upon retirement, he moved back to Maloy, IA, near his hometown, where he lived for several years, before moving to live with his daughter in Pacific Palisades, CA, for health reasons. He happily lived with her until his passing, enjoying many holidays and visits from friends, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and family.
He was a member of the Elks, the VFW, and the American Legion. He was a Christian and very active in his faith and church.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Hanna Swank. Surviving family members are his son, Daniel Swank, and his wife, Larissa (Bean) Swank, of North Bend, WA, and his daughter, Hilary Swank, and her husband, Philip Schneider of Telluride, CO. His grandchildren, Zackery Hammond and his wife, Alayna (Abreu) Hammond of Arlington, WA; Amanda (Swank) Johnson, and her husband, Edward (Eddie) Johnson, Sr., of Edmonds, WA, Brandon Swank and his wife, Eleni (Watts) Swank, of Black Diamond, WA; Elaine Bean of North Bend, WA; and Harper Swank of Edmonds, WA. His great-grandchildren, Rowan and Kincaid Hammond and Edward (Teddy) Johnson. One sister, Shirley (Swank) Hightshoe and husband, David, of Mount Ayr, IA; one brother, Kenneth Swank, and his wife, Jeanne (Whipple), of Monett, MO; and his ex-wife and friend, Judy Swank, and her significant other, Mark Redick, of Playa del Rey, CA, and many nieces and nephews.

Open visitation is from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and visitation with family will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, October 8, 2021, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe Street, Mount Ayr, IA, and a service of remembrance will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the United Baptist Presbyterian Church, 2343 US-169, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Graveside services will follow with the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and Ringgold Post #172 will in Rose Hill Cemetery.
