One Hundred Years Ago

November 11 is Armistice day. On this day three years ago fighting ceased and the bloody tragedy of a world war stopped.
Every true American is now grateful for that national and international peace. It is now proper and fitting that we as loyal and patriotic citizens should celebrate that event with serious, patriotic and religious programs.
The farmers in the vicinity of Shenandoah, Page County, are nonplussed over the cracking of the ground in alfalfa fields.
On the farm of Edward Gamble there are cracks in his alfalfa fields measuring fourteen inches across and deep enough so that a man can stand up to his waist.
County Agent Eichling has written the state geologist a description of the strange condition in the hope of receiving a cause for the break.
Kellerton News: Jake Michael’s barn burned Monday, destroying four hundred bushels of oats and all his hay.
Marriages: Last Tuesday, Laura Gravatt and John McLaughlin were united in marriage.

Years Ago

Ringgold County can have a hospital if the voters at the election on Tuesday, November 5, approve the $100,000 bond issue which will pay for it.
If this bond issue carries, the county can get an additional $50,000 from the government for the building. Ringgold County will be eligible to receive its share of surplus government equipment for hospitals also, according to Miss Bernice Lehmkuhl, who lead the study on Hospitalization at the meeting of the American Association of University Women held October 24.
The new barn on the Abe Swartz farm in Rice township was dedicated Friday night, when approximately 50 persons enjoyed an old-fashioned square dance.
Music for the occasion was furnished by Victor Wilson with his violin and two banjo players, Vilas Banner and Emmit German.

Announcement was made this week of the sale of the Fennema Implement Company, local dealers for John Deere farm equiment. New owners of the buisness are James Jobe and Jay Monday, who took over the operation on November 1. They purchased the business from Mr. and Mrs. Herman Fennema, who have been active in it for the past 26 years.
A Ringgold County man has been honored for twenty years of service as a weather observer. He is Kenneth Driftmier, manager of the Grundy-Shelby experimental farm at Beaconsfield.

Ringgold County first Eagle Scout in more than 20 years received his award in a recent ceremony.
John (J.W.) Egly, son of John and Marlee Egly of Redding completed work for his Eagle Scout award, highest honor a boy can receive in the Boy Scout program.
Mount Ayr Raiderettes cross country team qualified for the state meet in Fort Dodge, which will be held Saturday, November 2.
Members of the squad include, Laura Galloway, Amber Taylor, Mandy Johnson, Rachel Derscheid, Jennifer Nelson and Jennifer Newton.
A Mount Ayr instrumental music student has been named to the All-State band for the 50th year of the prestigious event. Erralee Bailey, daughter of Perry Bailey of Mount Ayr was selected to represent MACHS.

It’s been a couple of decades since the dream of a new jail for Ringgold County was first talked about by county sheriffs and almost five years since Ringgold County voters approved a one cent sales tax to fund one and the public will have an opportunity to tour the new facility Thursday night.
