The Raiders hosted the first round of the playoffs last Friday night with the Madrid Tigers showing up to play hard.
Mount Ayr started off strong with a big kick-return by Braydon Pierson, across the 50 to the Tiger 31.
The first play from scrimmage saw an Adler Shay carry and score, followed up by a Jaixen Frost field goal to go up 7-0 early.
The Tigers answered right away, but the point after was blocked by Jaydon Knight.
The Raiders were leading 13-6 at the end of the first and the Raiders had just moved the ball across midfield before Frost was picked off by Caydon Tucker who took the ball to the Raider 25.
The Tigers tied the contest at 13 after a fourth and 21 conversion through the air to Alex Foster.
The Raiders added eight more to the board with Frost finding Knight for six. The fake field goal pass to Austin Cole put the Raiders ahead 21-13 heading into halftime.
There was no score by either team in the third quarter as the defenses both held the offenses to the 16 yard line.
Out of the gate in the fourth, Shay punched one in from three yards out, followed by a Frost PAT to go up 28-13 over the Tigers.
Shay was a workhorse for the Raiders, carrying the ball 31 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
“He’s been Steady Eddie,” said coach Victor. “He’s been one guy we can count on. He’s been around since day one. He actually stuck around the day I accepted the job. Him and AC actually stuck around and wanted to talk to me which meant a lot. It meant “A” they wanted to get to know me and “B” they cared about this program. For him to have a night tonight, I’d say it’s his best night of the season, it’s great for him.”
The Raiders faced a fourth and three on the five yard line and kept the offense on the field. Frost called his own number and stretched the ball out over the goal line for a touchdown to put the Raiders ahead 34-13.
Madrid would score one more time to bring the score to 34-20.
The win for Mount Ayr gives coach Ryan Victor his first playoff win in his coaching career.
“Madrid is a school with a ton tradition and with coach Hinkle being the son of the former coach Hinkle and they have a former coach that coached with coach Hinkle, they are going to bring in what they’ve always had and be ready to play,” said coach Victor. “They’ve won three in a row, so they had a feeling they had found the recipe for success. They were able to move the ball pretty well on us. We didn’t play up to our potential on the defensive side of the ball. You will have that though. They are high school kids playing a high school game. This is one where the offense clicked well, the defense needs work and we have guys that will come back and make it happen next week.”
Coach Victor had just experienced his first district championship of his career the previous week after the win over Southwest Valley and is now enjoying his first playoff win. Despite playing eight games before this one, the nerves were there but coach Victor expects his guys to be ready to go every week.
“I expect our team to be more focused on their jobs and being the best that they can be,” said coach Victor. “Everyone is going to play good football now. It’s going to come down to who can execute better.”
The Raiders will host Logan-Magnolia this Friday night at 7 p.m.
