Raider Riley Stark attempts to maneuver through a contested shot against Clarke on Monday night.
Clarke 79, Mt. Ayr 43
The Raiders opened the season with a tough outing against the Clarke Indians Monday night, falling to the 3A team 79-43 at the buzzer.
Mount Ayr was unable to get a bucket until the Indians had already put the Raiders in an 18-point deficit.
The first points came from a Braydon Pierson trip to the line.
By the end of the first quarter, the Raiders trailed Clarke 23-6, a lead that the Indians wouldn’t give up for the next three quarters.
“Every team goes through this, where one year you’re trying to rebuild and you take a lot of beatings for awhile and that was Osceola two years ago. Last year we got them at home and they turned the corner and got better and better,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “Now we aren’t going to see 6’5, 6’6, 6’4 in the 1A club all the time. Their height got to us early, though I was happy with our cuts, with our offense, even though we were getting our shots blocked, we were getting what we normally get.”
Coach Ruggles sees the loss as a teachable moment for the team.
“This is fine, especially non-conference. You hate to have a game tomorrow because it would be nice to go back to film and practice, but we get to go home, go to sleep and tomorrow is a brand-new day,” said Ruggles. “It’s not those 10 and us two, it’s all 12 of us. We have to survive this.”
In the loss, the Raiders were eight-of-50 from the field, shooting 16 percent and four-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Leading the scorers was Braydon Pierson with 12 points, followed by Jaixen Frost with 11 and Riley Stark with 10.
Frost also led the team in rebounds with 12 and steals with four.
