William Dale (Bill) Andrews, son of Perle J. and Maude Ann (Groves) Andrews, was born September 17, 1929, in his home in Lincoln Township, Diagonal, IA. Bill passed away peacefully November 27, 2021 at Greater Regional Hospital in Creston from Covid pneumonia.
Bill attended country school in Benton and graduated from Benton Community High School. Bill was drafted to the US Army in 1953 serving for two years, stationed in Colorado and Alaska, where he joined his brother, Bob. there.
On November 15, 1958, Bill married Phyllis Ann Hammond at the Clearfield Church in a private ceremony with Keith Walter and Donna Teply standing with them. They then made their home in rural Diagonal, Redding and later settled in Benton where they called home.
On November 16, 1961, Bill and Phyllis Ann brought home their new baby girl. Teresa Ann.
Bill, brother Bob, and their families farmed together their whole life in Ringgold County. Bill and Bob also operated Andrew’s Backhoe Service and were inseparable – where you’d see one, the other was close by, this has continued at morning coffee in Benton. Bill took great pride in mowing cemeteries and yards, he was a 70-year member of the Odd Fellows, and was very involved in the Benton community, playing a big part in the building of the Waubonsie Community Center.
Bill and Phyllis’ family grew when Teresa had two children, Amanda, and then Adam. Along came great grands and they were all the highlight of Grandpa Bill’s life. He was also Grandpa Bill to many friends and acquaintances as Bill never knew a stranger. You’d never be at a sporting event that Grandpa wasn’t on the front row, proud as can be of grands, then great grands.
Bill will be terribly missed by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Andrews; daughter, Teresa (Mike) Crecelius of Sidney, IA; granddaughter, Amanda (Tomie) Overholser of Benton, IA; grandson, Adam (Liz) Jackson of Bondurant, IA; five great grandchildren, Abbi Overholser and Brodie Overholser of Benton, Brayden and Brody Field and Kasen Jackson of Bondurant, IA; brother, Robert (Bob) Andrews of Benton; nephews, Randy (Becky) Andrews of Benton, Rick (Vickie) Andrews of Lawrence, KS; niece, Karen (Mark) Roub of Alpharetta, GA; Nephews, Kevin (Tanya) Andrews of Leon, IA, Dwayne (Candy) Andrews of Unionville, MO, Kent (Denise) Andrews of Andover, MN, Dick Hammond of Creston, IA; niece, Diana (James) Turner of Creston, IA; many great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends of a lifetime who will miss his laughter, facebooking and his hugs.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Perle and Maude Andrews; brothers, Kenneth Max and Richard; sisters-in-law, Rose Andrews, Martha Perle Hammond; mother-in-law, Mary Hammond; brother-in-law, Richard Hammond, and niece, Sondra Andrews.
