Mount Ayr Elementary School once again has been ranked among the top elementary schools in the state, according to the annual report from U.S. News and World Report.
In the latest report released last week, Mount Ayr Elementary ranked 25th among 699 elementary schools studied for the report.
Data is based on the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.
Researchers reviewed three factors for arriving at their rankings: performance on state-required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare their students for high school.
(The report itself, however, focused only on the academic performance of Mount Ayr Elementary students but did not give any information pertaining to graduation (promotion) rates or high school preparation.)
Academic
performance
“At Mount Ayr Elementary, 87 percent of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 82% scored at or above that level for reading,” the report stated. “Mount Ayr Elementary did better in math and better in reading in this metric compared with students across the state. In Iowa, 68 percent of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 70 percent tested at or above that level for math.”
Other statistics
The U.S. News report included other statistics pertaining to the school:
• Student-teacher ratio is listed as 11:1.
• Mount Ayr Elementary has the equivalent of 27 full-time teachers, all of whom are certified with 96.2 percent having three or more years of experience.
• The student body is divided 57 percent male and 43 percent female.
• The school has a 2.7 percent minority enrollment.
• 46 percent of the student body is considered “economically disadvantaged.”
