WALT PRITCHARD

Walt Pritchard, 90, of Clarinda, IA, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022, at his home in Clarinda, IA. Open visitation was 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2022 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, IA. Visitation with the family was 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, IA. Funeral services was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, IA with Reverend Mike Harvey officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, IA with military rites.

Walter Ernest Pritchard, only son of John Ivan and Nellie Marie (Beauchamp) Pritchard, was born September 12, 1931, at Prescott, IA (Adams County) on a dairy farm operated by his father. Walter passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022.
He graduated in 1949 from Mount Ayr (Iowa) High School and attended Nebraska Business School for one year in Omaha, NE. From 1948 through 1952, he was employed with McCullough Motor Company in Mount Ayr. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for two years before being assigned to A.G. Classification and Assignment Duties at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. After release from active duty on June 7, 1954, he became employed with Hy-Vee, Inc., where he spent 35 years in management before retiring in 1989 from the Clarinda location.
In December 1952, Walter married Nola Fletchall of Grant City, MO, and in the ensuing years, three daughters and one son were born. Later, the family grew to include nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Following employment with Hy-Vee in four previous locations, Walter and his family settled in Clarinda, IA, in 1965. Following retirement from Hy-Vee, he sold real estate in the area for Greenwood Real Estate.
Walter was baptized at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr in 1953, and attended (and served) there from 1954-1957, and again between 1960 and 1965, after returning from Ottumwa, IA. After moving to Clarinda, he transferred membership to the local First Christian Church. Here, he served on the board for many years, working with the Chi-Rho and CYF teen youth groups during the 1960’s and 70’s. Walter also served as Deacon and Elder, and was on various committees as Chairman. Locally, he served 44 years in the Lions’ Club (twice serving as President), 30 years with the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Band Jamboree in 1969 and on the Retail Committee for 24 years. He was on the Clarinda A’s Baseball Club Board for 10 years (elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000), 20 years on the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Board (received lifetime membership plaque and award in 2002). He also served as a Hy-Vee Board of Director in 1963 and 1969. Walter was a member of the Masonic Lodge 179 in Mount Ayr for 50 years, in the American Legion for 60 years and was a Charter Member of the Jaycees in 1960.
He is survived by his wife, Nola, of 69 years, and children, Cathy (Ron) Hunt of Crystal Lake, IL, Joni (Steve) Sunderman of Clarinda, IA, Mark Pritchard of Moberly, MO and Jan Witthaus of Omaha, NE. Grandchildren are: Aubrey Sears (Milford, OH), Evan Hunt (Chicago, IL), Brandon Sunderman and Haley (Grain Valley, MO), Micaela Mellencamp and Scott (Clarinda, IA), Lane Pritchard (St. Louis, MO), Mackenzie Bain and Gregg (Moberly, MO), Cara Martin and Alan (Olathe, KS), Jared Witthaus (Omaha, NE) and Drew Witthaus and Taylar (Gretna, NE). Great Grandchildren are: Gavyn and Hayden Sunderman, Bailey (Dalton) Bloss, Will, Lane, Decker and Denton Mellencamp, Lauren and Ryder Martin and Dax Bain. Abel Bloss is a Great-Great Grandchild. Also surviving is Lucille Moler (sister), Randie, Ronnie and Rick Moler (nephews) and numerous cousins.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Landon Hunt (Grandson) and Ben Moler (Brother-in-Law).
