City receives funding for sewer upgrades

The Mount Ayr city council covered a relatively light agenda at their meeting Monday, February 10.
At the meeting the council:
• learned the city has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to go toward the upgrade project on the city’s sanitary sewer system and wastewater treatment plant.
Those funds will be added to another grant of $300,000 from the Iowa Finance Authority’s Wastewater and Drinking Water Transmission Financial Assistance Program and a loan from the State Revolving Funding for $380,000.
Total cost of the project has been estimated at $866,400.
• offered a three-year contract to Ranae Stewart to serve as the city’s recreation director at a salary of $5,200.
• raised lot rents at Loch Ayr 10 percent to $550 annually.
• renewed a 5-year agreement with D.A. Davidson to provide underwriting services for a potential new pool or recreation center.
• discussed proposed wage increases for city employees but tabled any action pending further explanation the proposal.
• tabled action on an agreement with Lockridge for installation of Internet antennas on the city’s water towers pending further explanation of details of the agreement.
• approved the liquor license renewal for Dollar General.
• heard questions from Ringgold County Sheriff’s deputy Chad Hunt seeking guidance in addressing junk cars and other nuisance complaints.
He also asked the council if it had any intention of limiting semi-truck traffic on the brick streets surrounding the square as part of a proposed downtown revitalization project. The council responded that no limit had been discussed to this point.
• following a public hearing, approved Budget Amendment #2 for FY22.
The council set a public hearing for the FY23 “Maximum Levy Budget” for 6:15 p.m. on Monday, February 21.
