To the editor:
Darrell Dodge’s April 14 column proposing city owned trailer parks as a solution to finding affordable housing in Mount Ayr is far from “Idle Chatter” and is a thoughtful and timely idea to be taken up right away.
With the pandemic receding and people returning to city jobs and with interest rates rising the bubble in real estate will probably burst soon, but that will not solve the chronic problem of affordable housing in small town Iowa.
Without housing there will be no growth, no new jobs, no new families moving to the area. I would add one more chapter to his proposal: the city should also have available housing for refugees and legal immigrants. Ukraine is an agricultural powerhouse and I suspect some of those displaced farmers would jump at a farming job and a safe place for their families and children.
