Phyllis Ann (Hammond) Andrews, daughter of Foster Hammond and Mary (Novak) Hammond was born July 29, 1940, in rural Diagonal, IA. Phyllis passed away peacefully at Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, IA on April 28, 2022.
Phyllis attended school and graduated with the Class of 1958 Diagonal Community Schools.
On November 15, 1958, Phyllis Ann Hammond married William Dale Andrews at the Clearfield Church in a private ceremony. They made their home in rural Diagonal, rural Redding and later settled in rural Benton, IA.
On November 16, 1961, Bill and Phyllis welcomed home baby girl, Teresa Ann. Phyllis could be found being a mom, working at Gunter’s Jewelry, Arlene Hutchinson’s antique shop, Farm and Home and the Real Style Shop where she worked with dear friend, Kay Faris. Phyllis later retired as a housekeeper at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr where she gained so many special friends’ she kept all these years.
Phyllis Ann was well known to be doing what she loved most which was to care for, love and spoil anyone who came to visit, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also known to spoil and feed neighbors and school friends throughout those years as well.
Phyllis excelled at cooking, sewing, baking and crafting. She made many crafts to adorn the Alumni Banquet each year in Benton, IA and sewed many Halloween outfits.
Bill and Phyllis Ann adored Teresa’s two children, Adam and Amanda, who grew up and added to their family tree.
Bill and Phyllis could be seen in the front row at 100’s of baseball, football and wrestling events and then later at every tractor pull, no matter what the weather was. She also cooked many meals for grandkids, great grands, friends, neighbors, CERT Team and Waubonsie Center dinners. Phyllis also could be seen weed eating for Bill when he mowed many yards, cemeteries and lots.
Phyllis will be terribly missed by her daughter, Teresa (Mike) Crecelius of Sidney, IA; granddaughter, Amanda (Tomie) Overholser of Benton, IA; grandson, Adam (Liz) Jackson of Bondurant, IA; five great grandchildren, Abbi Overholser and Brodie Overholser of Benton, IA, Brayden and Brody Field and Kasen Jackson of Bondurant, IA; brother-in-law, Robert (Bob) Andrews of Diagonal, IA; nephews, Randy (Becky) Andrews of Diagonal, IA, Rick (Vickie) Andrews of Lawrence, KS, Kevin Andrews (fiancé, Tanya Chesnut) of Leon, IA, Dwayne (Candy) Andrews of Unionville, MO, Kent (Denise) Andrews of Andover, MN, Dick Hammond of Creston IA; nieces, Karen (Mark) Roub of Cleveland, GA, Diana Turner (friend, James Pinson) of Creston IA; many great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors. Cousin, Kay Powell, and classmate, Merrill Starmer McCullough and Twyla Taylor Breckenridge will indeed miss her chats. Special friends, Kay Faris of Mount Ayr, Joan Dugan of Mount Ayr, special RCH housekeeping friends, EveryStep Hospice nurses, Clearview Home staff and resident friends, special Hospice volunteer, Connie Doudy, and many special friends and neighbors.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years on November 27, five months and one day before Phyllis passed. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Foster Hammond, Mary Martha Hammond; mother-in-law, Maude (Groves) Andrews, and father-in-law, Perle J. Andrews; her best friend and brother, Richard Hammond; sister-in-law, Martha Alice (Bladon) Hammond; sister-in-law, Rose (Courtney) Andrews; brother-in-law, Kenneth Andrews; niece, Sondra Andrews and many cousins and friends.
Phyllis has been cremated and private graveside services will be held at a later date in the Benton Cemetery.
Memorials are to the family to be decided later.
