Edward Eugene (Gene) McAlexander was born to Riley and Ora (Paddock) McAlexander near Percival, IA, August 27, 1924. He was welcomed by brothers, Carl and Robert, and later Naomi, Kenneth and Dale joined the family. In his younger years, Eugene’s family farmed in Fremont and Mills counties. They moved to Ringgold County in 1941 where he lived the rest of his life. Following graduation from the Beaconsfield Consolidated School in 1943, Eugene farmed with his father north of Beaconsfield.
On October 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Esther Catherine Doser at the Methodist Church in Kellerton, IA. They started their married life in Beaconsfield. In 1962, Eugene, Esther and the older five children moved to the McAlexander family farm north of Beaconsfield, later welcoming two more children. The seven children include: Elaine, Evelyn, Earl, Eldon, Ellen, Emily and Elsa. The family grew with sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Gene farmed until retiring in 1994, and then hobby farmed on an acreage in Beaconsfield until early 2022. Gene was devoted to many passions. He had a love of the land and was always a farmer at heart. Gene was quick to start a conversation with anyone. His greatest joy was his family. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of pride to him. He was especially proud that all seven of his children graduated from college. Gene enjoyed sports of all sorts, but especially basketball and football. He enjoyed catching as many Iowa State football and basketball games on TV and radio as possible. He was a 4-H leader for the Beacon Bombers for over 30 years, a National Weather Service observer for 32 years and supplied much of Beaconsfield with produce from his bountiful garden. At the 2022 Ringgold County Fair, Eugene and Esther were honored for their 4-H service. They will be inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair in August. Eugene also served as a city council member for Beaconsfield and was active in the Beaconsfield United Methodist Church. For many years he was also Esther’s dedicated caretaker; the family and community learned so much about love and compassion by watching his actions.
Eugene passed away at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center on July 18, 2022, at the age of 97. Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, his parents, his in-laws, Emery and Ethel Doser, and other family including Carl and Marjorie McAlexander, Robert and LaVara McAlexander, Don and Naomi Johnston, Kenneth McAlexander, Dale McAlexander, Paul Eugene and Mary Doser and grandson, Jacy McAlexander.
