Last week the Iowa Department of Education released the results of the online school accountability reporting system called the Iowa School Performance Profiles. The website shows updated scores and ratings for all public schools based on how they performed on a set of accountability measures in the 2021-22 school year.
For the second consecutive year, Mount Ayr Community High School (grades 7-12) received a “Commendable” performance rating, scoring 55.14 points on a 100-point scale. The state average performance total is 54.65.
Mount Ayr students performed at or above the state average in 10 of the 12 performance indicators used to calculate a school’s rating:

Post-secondary readiness 52.24 50.00
The “Growth” indicator in both math and English/language arts measures student growth by looking at assessment scores over time to determine whether a student performed better or worse than his/her academic peers (students at the same grade level with similar scores)
As has been explained by school administration in reference to past performance profiles, showing growth in math and English can present a challenge when proficiency scores in both areas are already well above state averages. Scores in the growth categories have a negative impact on Mount Ayr’s overall performance score because both areas are weighted nearly double any other of the 12 indicators.
The Conditions for Learning indicator is based upon perceptions of school climate by students. These assessments are voluntary and anonymous. This indicator, along with the post-secondary readiness indicator, are the next two most heavily weighted scores.
