Nodaway Valley 71, Mount Ayr 60
The Raiders lost their first contest of the season last week to the Nodaway Valley Wolverines.
The Wolverines jumped ahead early against the Raiders, putting the Raiders in unfamiliar territory.
After the first eight minutes, the Raiders found themselves behind by six, 22-16.
The second quarter saw the Raiders close the gap slightly, but at halftime, the Raiders trailed 40-35.
The Raiders fell behind even further in the third, scoring only seven points to the Wolverines 19 points.
The Wolverines were led by a three-point attack that saw Dawson Nelson hit five-of-nine three’s to amass 23 points on the night, along with Boston Devault who scored 19 points that was led by five-of-nine three pointers.
Of 49 buckets, the Wolverines shot 11-of-25 from outside the arc.
Nodaway Valley grabbed 24 defensive rebounds and had 24 assists, six steals and three blocks.
The Raiders were seven-of-17 on the night from behind the arc, while hitting 22-of-46 shots all night.
Braydon Pierson led the offense with 20 points, while Jaixen Frost was held to 15 and Ryce Reynolds broke into the double digits with 11.
“They came in shooting lights out and that’s one thing they haven’t been doing,” said Pierson. “Our defense wasn’t there like it usually is and over Christmas break we will definitely work on defense.”
Mount Ayr recorded 21 total rebounds, six steals and had two blocks on the night.
“We’ve held teams to 50-60 points and they got 70. Nelson, Phillipi and Devault haven’t shot 26 percent from the three point line all year and I bet they were shooting 50-60,” said coach Bret Ruggles. “You’re going to get peoples best and people are looking for you, unfortunately took a tough loss going into break.”
