Council disposes of two properties

The disposal of two tracts of city-owned property was the main focus of a short meeting of the Mount Ayr City Council Monday evening.
The first tract was at 206 East Jefferson. There was only one bidder on the property. Mark & Leza Johnson purchased the lot for $3,500 for the construction of a garden/storage building.
The second tract of land attracted much more interest. The property is localed at 703 N. Cleveland Street (across from Ringgold County Hospital).
Three parties put in bids on the property will Rahim Martin submitting the high bid of $25,000. Martin plans to erect a shop building on the land.
Other bidders were Jeff Lutrick ($22,222.23) and Baylee Stull and Katie Reynolds ($15,000).
The council also set the pay for the Recreation Director position. The position will pay $5,570.24, a 4% increase over last year. The council also approved a list of coaches for the 2023 Little League program.
Other actions
• The council set April 17 as the date for the Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year Beginning July 1, 2003 and running through June 20, 2024.
• Approved the Airport Lighting Design.
• City Superintendent Brent Wise updated the council on sewer problems behind the William French building on the square. Because record weren’t available due to the age of the property, the city agreed to look into a solution to problems.
The Council agreed to have Wise look into the cost of installing a new main with a manhole in the alley East of Lefty’s stopping at French’s lateral.
At a future meeting once Wise has a cost the Council can act on if they will pay for the main portion with French’s paying for their lateral from their property to the new main installed by the city.
• There was a mistake in the agreement with Waste Management concerning recycling services. Apparently, the city has been overpaying for these services. The city will recoup the overpayment with lower rates going forward.
• The council will consider a change to the ordinance regarding building materials used on garages. The issue will go to the zoning commission for discussion.
