A well-known Ringgold County businessman and an Afton woman were both killed in a head-on collision on Wednesday, March 15.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, David Patrick Love, 54, of Mount Ayr was killed when his 2010 Chevrolet Silverado collided with Donna Kay Allen, 44 of Afton, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado.
Love owned and operated Love’s Heating and Air Conditioning at 1002 East Van Buren Street in Mount Ayr.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. They say Love was southbound on 170th Ave., approaching 110th Street, north of Diagonal.
As the same time, Allen was northbound at the same location.
The patrol says both trucks were traveling in or close to the center of the gravel road and were not yielding half the roadway. Both vehicles were traveling up a hill and could not see the other coming and struck each other on the front left corner.
The impact caused Allen’s truck to bounce backward to the east edge of the road were it came to rest. Love’s vehicle veered off of the roadway.
Both drivers died at the scene. A passenger in Allen’s truck, Shawn William Allen, 46 of Afton, was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines by helicopter. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
The patrol says none of those involved in the accident were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the accident.
Celebration of Life Services for Love will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
