Steve Wasteney, 78, of Shannon City died Friday, October 27, 2023, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr. Open Memorial visitation will be Thursday November 2, 2023, from 2-7 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston with family to receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday. Family requests casual dress. Steven Earl Wasteney was born November 25, 1944, in Spencer, Ia. to Leonard E. Wasteney and Clara Marie (Ferguson) Wasteney. During his grade school years, the family moved to Arispe, Ia. While in school he excelled at sports. He graduated from East Union High School in 1963. He continued his education at Iowa State University where he also had the opportunity to play baseball while he was there earning a degree in Agricultural Education in 1967.
On June 4, 1967, Steve was united in marriage to Janet Sue Eklund in Shannon City, Ia. They settled in Milford, Ia. where he taught vocational agriculture and was the F.F.A. advisor for a year. They moved to Osceola where he continued in a similar role in addition to junior high science at Murray School District until 1970.
In 1970 they moved to Shannon City where Steve began to farm full-time. They were blessed with the births of their sons Mike in 1970 and Brent in 1973. Also, in those early years in addition to farming he worked for J.T.P.A. in job placement, later when Wal-Mart came to Creston, he was the Sports Department Manager and a feed salesman for Creston Feed and Grain/ Farmers Coop. Steve never really retired he just transitioned into a position of supervisor on the farm. Steve served for many years as a Union County Supervisor. He also was a former member of the Masonic lodge and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Steve’s pride and joy was his four grandchildren who could make any day a good day.
Steve is survived by his wife Janet Wasteney of Shannon City, Ia.; his two sons, Michael (wife Barb) Wasteney of Waukee, Ia. and Brent (wife Karie) Wasteney of Shannon City, Ia.; two brothers, Craig (wife Sharon ) Wasteney of Hannibal, Mo. and Raymond (wife Nadine) Wasteney of The Villages, Fla. and four grandchildren, Evan (wife Cassie) of Overland Park, Kan., Sydney Wasteney (Jake Kaiman) of Naperville, Ill., Kash Wasteney and Keely Wasteney both of Shannon City, Ia.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and Father in-law Dorothy and Clarence Eklund.
