Shaha 113 lb. champ at POI meet
The Mount Ayr boy’s wrestling team traveled to Corning and SW Valley High school last Friday for the annual Pride of Iowa COnference meet.
There, the Raiders collected one individual champion in Brock Shaha at the 113-pound weight class.
The Raiders as a team placed ninth at the conference meet with a team score of 49 points. The tournament was the last competition that Mount Ayr will have before Christmas break. The Raiders will be back in action on January 6 at the North Mahaska Invitational. The first dual action of the new year will be on January 9 when Mount Ayr faces SE Warren-Melcher Dallas.
Brock Shaha improved to 13-1 on the season and was the top seed at the 113-pound weight class. Shaha had a bye to the semifinals. There, he pinned Ty Strode from Nodaway Valley in 5:23 to reach the finals. In the finals, Shaha won by a medical forfeit. Against Strode, Shaha led 2-0 after the first period after a takedown with 31 seconds left in the period.
In the second period, Shaha started on bottom and earned an escape point eight seconds into the period for a 3-0 lead. He would get a takedown with 42 seconds left in the period to extend his lead to 5-0.
In the third period, Shaha picked up three more points for an 8-0 lead, enough for a major decision win, but would get the fall in the final minute of the match.
Mount Ayr had two other placewinners at the conference meet. Conlee Stark reached the finals at the 150-pound weight class before finishing second while Bracken Collier was sixth at 165.
Stark improved to 14-6 and was second at 150.
Stark pinned Trace Ewart from Bedford in 1:15 in the quarterfinals. Stark scored a takedown six seconds into the match and added a 2-point near fall to lead 4-0. The score was 4-1 at the time of the pin. In the semifinals,
Stark won a close 6-3 decision over Ely Rodriguez from SW Valley to reach the finals. Rodriguez led 2-0 after a first period takedown and 3-0 after two periods. In the third, Stark got a late escape with 22 seconds left in the match for a 3-1 score. He then scored a takedown with ten seconds left in the match to tie the score at 3-3. Stark would get Rodriguez in a bad spot on his back and rack up three-near fall points as time wound down in the final period to claim the match 6-3, scoring all six of his points in the final period.
In the finals, Stark lost a 3-0 decision to Sampson Henson to place second. Henson was the top seed in the bracket while Stark was the 3-seed. Stark wrestled well in the finals, but came up short.
The score was 0-0 after the first and the second periods. In the final period, Henson would get an escape after starting in the down position, eight seconds into the final period for a 1-0 lead. With just under a minute remaining, Henson would get a takedown to take a 3-0 lead.
Also picking up a place was Bracken Collier at 165. Collier received a couple of byes at the 165-pound weight class and fell in all three matches he was in. Collier, a 7-10 record, lost a 9-2 decision to Caleb Christensen from Nodaway Valley in the 5th place match. Christensen had 15 wins at the time of the bout.
Also wrestling at the conference meet, but not placing were Tate Schaefer at 132, Ty Noble at 114, Tegan Hill at 157, and Jonathan Morales at 285.
