One Hundred Years Ago

After six years as postmaster Mrs. B.F. Seaton has resigned. Mrs. H. K. Seaton is her successor beginning work January 1.
The postoffice has been moved from B.F.Seaton Store to the M.H. Evans building across the street.
Truman Dulany, who is associated with his father, L.S. Dulany in handling the business at the Dulany Produce House, reviewed the record of the year’s work the first of the year and found that during the year 1923 the one produce house in Mount Ayr purchased from the farmers 49,434.9 pounds of butterfat, which represented an income to their patrons for butterfat alone of $18-567.57.
The lowest price paid for butterfat during the year was 28 cents and the highest 52 cents. The number of cans shipped was 2,250. The number of farmers who find it profitable to keep dairy cows is constantly increasing.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

An average of 21 deaths per month was recorded in the Record News during the year which has just closed.
The names of 265 persons were included on the list of residents and former residents, their relatives and friends, who were called in death in 1948. Of the total number, which was 22 more than in the 12 month period of the preceding year, 156 or nearly 5/8ths of the deceased were male.
Mrs. Max Tindle is this week opening a beauty shop in her home in the east part of Diagonal.
Complimentary to the Raiders’ basketball team, which downed the Dowling team Friday night by a score of 49 to 36, Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Willey entertained with a steak dinners Saturday night at Johnny and Kay’s in Des Moines.
Guests included in the courtesy were; Claire Eason, Clifford Teale, Jack Braby, Dean Stuck, Bob Drake, Melvin Ingram, and Franklin Smith and cheerleaders Belle Sickels and Catherine Conant, who were invited guests of the basketball boys.

Fifty Years Ago

County seeks home for Orr Fisher’s paintings.
Orr Fisher, well known painter of Fresno, CA, is eager to come back to Mount Ayr, the hometown he left in 1948. And he wants to bring with him his extensive collections of paintings.
Fisher, who is 88 years old, stated in a letter to Mrs. J.C. Galloway, “As you already know, I have promised my art to Ringgold County if the county would furnish a home for them.”
Royce Davis was the big winner in the Mount Ayr men’s Bowling Association Tournament recently competed at Lucky Lanes in Mount Ayr. He won the singles and all events and was a member of the winning Security State Bank team.
Davis had a 611 scratch series in singles and this, combined with a 52 handicap, gave him a winning total of 663. David Brand had a 642 total for second, scratch series. Bill Rinehart was 3rd with 653; Algie Link had a 634, Don Solliday had a 624 and Don Nungesser, 621.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

The new year came in with a wintery vengeance this year with 5” of snow dumped on the area over 3 days and bitterly cold temperatures.
Low temperatures plunged below zero degrees Fahrenheit for 4 days in the past week with -17 reading the coldest temperature recorded so far this year.
A step toward saving the gymnasium wing of the former Grand Valley elementary school building was made at Kellerton city council meeting Monday night. The plan right now would be for the city to retain possession of the building with an independent board appointed to operate the facility.

Births: December 29, a daughter, Molly, to Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Anderson…December 24, twin boys, Christopher and Donavon, to Mr. and Mrs. Brant Snook.

Ringgold County Recorder/Registar Karen Schaefer has announced she will not seek re-election for her position in the upcoming November elections. Schaefer has served 4 terms as county recorder. She began working in the recorder’s office on June 26, 1989 as deputy recorder under Carol Weeda.
Ghostbusters! Paranormal researchers pursue local spooks in Mount Ayr. A Mount Ayr Ghost Hunters group was founded in 2009 and today has six members. Most recently the Mount Ayr Ghost Hunters conducted an investigation in the upstairs of the Timby building on the northeast corner of the square, the location of Ramsey’s Supper Club. “It’s the most active place I’ve been in, in the last seven yeras.” said Skip Rushing.
