Dennis Charles Powell, known affectionately as Dennis to all that knew him, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023, at the age of 85. A native of Iowa, born September 7, 1938, to Rolland and Oy Terwilliger. Dennis’s early life was steeped in the values and traditions of the American heartland.
His service in the United States Navy brought him to Charleston South Carolina, a place he would eventually call home long after his retirement. Dennis’s unwavering sense of duty and camaraderie to become an active member of VFW Post 9509, where he formed lifelong friendship and extended his commitment to his fellow servicemen and women.
Dennis leaves behind his wife, Darlene Russell Powell of Ridgeville, SC and their blended family including children Penny Lynn (Robert) Freeman, Christopher Charles (Lisa) Powell, Laura Denise (Kirk) Haworth, Jennie Stevenson, Shawn (Rhae) Dupree and James (Tena) Dupree. His legacy continues through his 10 grandchildren; Kyle Powell; Emily and Lane Haworth; Matthew, Michael and Aaron Steveson; Tyler, Delette, Kyle and Shelby Dupree. Also, eight great grandchildren. Proceeding him in death, two grandsons, Beau Freeman and Hunter McLaughlin. He is also survived by brothers: Greg (Hazel) Powell, Stepbrother, Howard (Diane) Johnson. Two brothers preceded him in death: Everett (Jake) Powell and Buddy Powell. One sister survives, Paula (Polly) Rychnovsky.
January 4, 2024, his service was held at Russell Funeral Chapel, Moncks Corner South Carolina. VFW Post 9509 presented full military honors.
