School hot lunch menu announced by Miss Otto for next week is as follows: Monday, January 28, cream of pea soup; Tuesday, January 29, Coca; Wednesday January 30, potato soup; Thursday January 31, cream of corn soup; Friday February 1, vegetable soup. Milk is also served each day at less than cost.
Beaconsfield news: The school wagons have been made more comfortable for the pupils by the new coal heater furnished by the school board and put in the 1st week .

Gross receipts at the Mount Ayr post office reached all-time high in the history of the local office, according to a report complied by assistant postmaster, C.E. Hollopeter. Total receipts, which included sale of stamps, permits, second class postage and box rent, amounted to $18,282.94 which is $2,354.98 higher than 1947 and $774 higher than the previous peak year of 1945.
Allen Stephens and son W.A. Stephens, left early yesterday morning and arrived this morning in Washington, D.C., to attend the inaugural ceremony for President Harry S. Truman. Before returning to Mount Ayr, January 28, they will also enjoy side trips to Annapolis, MD, Mount Vernon, New York, Niagra Falls, Buffalo and Chicago, IL.
Marriage: December 25, Helen Richards and Burton Holt.
Births: January 10, a son, James Richard, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pence…January 11, a son, Gary, to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hudson…January 16, a daughter, Doris, to Mr. and Mrs. Manson Reynolds.

Becky Sue Myers, 4 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Myers of Mount Ayr will appear January 26 at 5 p.m. on the Bill Riley Talent Sprouts Show over WHO-TV, channel 13.
A crowd estimated at from 200-250 persons attended the city council’s special meeting on the proposed paving program last Wednesday night. Mayor Amos Lee presided at the meeting which gave interested citizens a chance to be heard for or against the proposed paving program.
The council had proposed paving some 50 blocks of streets in Mount Ayr with 28 feet wide concrete.
According to engineer Lynn Sickels of Mid-State Engineering of Creston, the firm which drew up the proposals, if residents along a particular street representing 75 per cent of the dollar value oppose paving, the council must vote 100 per cent in favor.

Two men who robbed the Commercial Federal Bank in Lamoni Thursday were still being sought by law enforcement officials Wednesday morning.Timothy Taylor, 20, and Michael Taylor, 20, both of Shreveport, LA, were being sought after being suspects in a murder in Louisiana, the bank robbery in Lamoni and theft of a vehicle in Missouri. The two men are not related. Meanwhile Lamoni police chief Dale Killpack is back home after surgery in which he lost an eye after being shot in the face by the gunman as he gave chase when they left the scene of the bank robbery.
A third of a century of experience in teaching and administration at the Mount Ayr Elementary school will come to a close at the end of the current school year. Larry Giles, elementary school principal, turned in a letter of resignation effective at the end of the 1998-99 school year to the MAC school board meeting Monday night.
Jeff Haugland returned home from Phoenix, AZ’s International Kart Federation Holiday Classic with the championship crystal trophy for winning the master’s go-kart title race held in Phoenix.

Three Raiders join the 100 win club. Erik Freed, Joe Ricker, and Dawson Knapp were honored at the conclusion of the Ron Scott Dual Tournament for reaching 100 wins in their wrestling careers.
Payten Lambert in the 8-9 age group and Payton Weehler in the 10-11 age group, won their divisions in the Elks Hoop Shoot held Saturday January 18.
On January 25th the Mount Ayr large group speech will get their creative juices flowing as they travel to Clarinda to compete in the district speech competition. There will be 20 students competing in a variety of areas.
Birth: January 18 a son, Jaxon, to Taylor Davis and Jacob Cave.
