One Hundred Years Ago

Ringgold county located in the world’s most fertile area.
The most fertile spot of ground in the world for outdoor fertility is within 100 miles of Clarinda, Page county, with that town as the center of a circle superior in fertility to the Jordan, delta of the Nile, the Ganges, or any other river bed in the whole wide world.
Why the fertility value of the soil in Iowa is the first 40 inches is worth hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. That is the reason we buy almost minimum of commercial fertilizers in Iowa.
News of Middle Fork –
The snow storm that struck this community last week filled some of the roads full in places. Some of the men got out Wednesday and scooped them out. The mail man did not go all the way round his route Tuesday or Wednesday.
News of Delphos-Darlen and Lela Reed are out of school on account of the measles.
The sleet storm Friday did incalculable damage to the trees and linemen of the telephone and electric light systems have had their troubles, but up to this time the service has not been greatly crippled.
Roughly estimated, sleet covers the ground to the depth of about one-half inch with a light covering of snow and sleighing and skating parties are in order to the delight of the youngsters.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The enrollment in boy’s 4H Clubs has passed 300 mark, according to John Blauer, county youth assistant. This means that the enrollment since 1946 has quadrupled.
The organization of a new 4-H club in east Riley township put the enrollment over the 300 figure. There are now 16 organized 4-H clubs in the county.
A Massey-Harris implement agency has been opened in Mount Ayr by the Hawley Implement Company. It is the second agency to be established by John Hawley, the other company being located in Grant City.
The Hawley Implement is located in the building formerly occupied by Sandy Stringham, two doors east of the Mount Ayr Mill and Feed store.

There was a wolf hunt by aeroplane in this neighborhood last Thursday afternoon.

Fifty Years Ago

The Ringgold County Hospital has taken another big step into the Electronic Age, or to be more precise, computerized medicine. A national computer network, TELEMED corp. will soon be installing the instrumentation which will enable the Ringgold County Hospital to “telephone in” electrocardiograms taken on its patients. The ECG information will be transmitted to the Schiller Park, IL computer center where it is processed. The computer will then call the hospital and a remote printer will receive the analysis.
The serving of congregate meals for the elderly citizens of Ringgold County will start February 25 in the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr.
Any person over 60 years of age is eligible to share the meals which will be served at noon hour on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week. Suggested price of each meal is 75 cents.
DeeDee Frost, junior forward from Mount Ayr and Linda VanWinkle, junior forward from Clearfield, took the sectional free throwing honors Saturday.
They both competed at Mount Ayr. DeeDee hit 23 of 25 attempts while Linda had 21 of 25. The two girls will advance to district competition at Afton Saturday.
Three Raider wrestlers qualified for the district tournament at Winterset Friday and Saturday. Alan Schafer at 119 lb, Ed Rotert at 145 lb and Duane Blades at heavyweight.

Birth: February 15 a son to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rowen.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Mayor Max Anderson resigned the position he has served in since 1994 in an emotional exchange with Raymond Hensley concerning the Hymbaugh subdivision ordinance at Monday nights city council meeting.
Angi Dodge of Mount Ayr was the annual Miss Valentine contest winner in a contest sponsored by CGI Foods in Mount Ayr.
She received dinner for two, flowers and candy for Valentine’s Day after her name was selected in a drawing held at the store.
For the forth year in a row the Mount Ayr Community Raiderette girls basketball team has made it to the district tournament finals.
Be Dorr won the 189 pound title and Brett Shields won the 119 pound title for the Mont Ayr Raider wrestlers in the sectional tournament Saturday advancing them to the district tournament in Truro.
Diagonal Maroonettes extend the 1999 basketball season with a victory in the first round of the Class 1A district girls basketball tournament.

Two Raider wrestlers qualify for the state wrestling tournament. Erik Freed at 138 pound and Joe Ricker at 285 pound class both advance.
In an effort to support healthy living in Ringgold county, members of the Mount Ayr Community school football team and cheerleading squad have raised $5,000 to provide uninsured residents of Ringgold county free screening mammograms.
The partners of the Mount Ayr Inn and Suites Hotel want to introduce Mona Hensley as the new manager of our hotel. Mona is a southwest Iowa native.
