To the editor:
The City of Mount Ayr is a local government entity that strives to meet the needs of our community through community services, facilities, infrastructure, and other investments in housing, economic development, recreation, and public safety.
Our work impacts all ages and income levels. We seek to make Mount Ayr the premier place to live, work, and play in southern Iowa.
The Dekko Foundation invests in projects that help children and youth, up to age 18, build the skills, knowledge, and character that they’ll need to travel the path toward economic freedom. They believe our project reinforces their beliefs and have decided to support our project by investing $250,000.
Our youth, community, and surrounding area would like to take this opportunity to thank The Dekko Foundation.
The City of Mount Ayr’s public pool has been in operation since 1962 and now shows significant disrepair due to age, despite proactive maintenance and, more recently, expensive repairs simply to keep it open.
Replacing the pool has been a community goal for many years. About 13 years ago, the City secured FEMA funds to demolish the old bathhouse and replace it with a tornado shelter, but funding was not attainable for the pool itself.
In the past five years, the old pool continued to show increasing water leaks that were draining public resources and resulting in shortened or canceled seasons.
In 2021, a team was re-formed and more recently a firm was hired to develop conceptual drawings.
A bond was passed by voters to generate substantial funds toward the project.
Recently, final design contracts were signed.
The outdoor pool will be approximately 4,000-square feet and include a current channel, lap lanes, diving boards, and spray features.
Two slides, zero-depth entry, and an additional diving board are bid alternates.
The plan is to finish fundraising in spring 2024, bid the project, and start construction by summer of 2024.
The city would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported the project whether by volunteering or donating.
